Dr. Annie Wright, a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care medicine with BluePearl Veterinary Partners is Minnesota, offered this advice: • Antifreeze is highly toxic to people and animals. • A Lost Civilization

    Maureen Dowd|Dec 11, 2012

MY college roommates and I used to grocery shop and cook together. The only food we seemed to agree on was corn, so we ate a lot of corn. My mom would periodically call to warn me in a dire tone, “Do you know why the Incas are extinct?” Her maize hazing left me with a deeply ingrained fear of being part of a civilization that was obliviously engaging in behavior that would lead to its extinction. Too bad the Republican Party didn’t have my mom to keep it on its toes. Then it might not have...

  • An Energy Revolution on the Navajo Reservation

    Ruben Hernandez, Latino Perspectives|Dec 11, 2012

KAYENTA, Ariz. –When millions of residents in Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas and Los Angeles flip a light or turn on a faucet, they’re likely unaware of the connection to the Black Mesa coal mine, located on the Navajo Reservation. It’s an exchange that has lit cities, irrigated surrounding farmland and, for the Navajo, brought with it a much-needed economic jolt. But growing environmental concerns now have many pushing for its end. Increasingly, residents say they are being made sick by the haze...

  • Maria Elena Baca, Star Tribune|Dec 11, 2012

The St. Francis school board voted Monday night to oust first-term board member Matthew Rustad, the subject of controversy after he admitted plagiarizing a column he'd submitted for the north metro school district's newsletter. Rustad, 22, was removed by a 4-2 vote of the board. Only once before in Minnesota has a sitting school board member been voted off the board by his peers. In 2009, Curt Rude was removed from the Austin school board after he sued the district and the superintendent. The St. Francis move is in step with a recommendation fr...

  • The Election Is Over, but the Voting Rights Fight Is in Full Swing

    Aura Bogado, New America Media|Dec 11, 2012

One of the most popular post election narratives remains that voter suppression efforts were soundly defeated. While the concept is essentially true, it says very little about how voting rights will fare in the near future—or how activists are continuing the work they began to preserve voting rights. Many voter ID measures, cut offs to early voting, and excessive voter purges were blocked or weakened at the state level in 2012, but lawmakers are aiming to propose new measures in 2013. The S...
