  • Tax cuts? Hell. No. Thousands of American Indian and Alaska Native children will lose health insurance

    Nov 28, 2017

Congress has yet to reenact the Children’s Health Insurance Program and states will soon run out of funds to prop up the program. That will mean that thousands of American Indian and Alaska Native children will lose their health insurance. And, the result is the Indian Health Service will have to stretch its already thin dollars to try and cover the budget hole. The Children’s Health Insurance Program expired Sept. 30. This federal program insures young people and pregnant women who make just enough money not to qualify for Medicaid (but can...

    Nov 28, 2017

A former Main Line investment banker known as the “godfather of payday lending” was found guilty of racketeering conspiracy charges Monday by federal jurors, whose verdict cast doubt on the legality of business tactics that have enabled the multibillion-dollar industry for years. The panel of nine women and three men took less than nine hours to convict Charles M. Hallinan — who in a nearly two-decade career originated strategies that have been widely adopted by other payday lenders — on 17 counts that also included fraud and interna...

  • Cronkite News: Indian Country hit hard by changes in Lifeline telecommunications program

    Nov 28, 2017

WASHINGTON – The Federal Communications Commission is moving to rein in a low-cost telephone service for low-income customers that critics say will hit Indian Country hard if fully implemented. But FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and other supporters say the reforms would close the digital divide between urban and rural Americans by ending “ongoing waste, fraud and abuse” in the program that serves more than 12 million people nationwide – and 212,630 people in Arizona as of August. https://www.indianz.com/News/2017/11/27/cronkite-news...

  • How a Murder in the Grand Canyon Changed Three Lives

    Nov 28, 2017

“Is this a crisis?” The woman at the reception desk of the Guidance Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, needed to know. “Yes!” my friend Mary responded for me as she pushed paperwork my way. I could not read because my vision was blurry with tears and my hands were trembling so violently I struggled to hold a pen. https://www.outsideonline.com/2261511/pure-land-annette-mcgivney-excerpt...

    Nov 28, 2017

Compared to plenty of other Northeast South Dakota towns, Sisseton doesn't necessarily qualify as a "blink and you'll miss it" sort of town. But the local college's brand-new women's basketball team is trying out that mantra for itself anyway. https://www.dailyamerican.com/sisseton-wahpeton-mustangs-women-bucking-expectations-in-year/article_a18a2bed-ccc7-5b8b-9a82-266afe5ff2d2.html...

When Keith Wynne arrived at the nursing station on the Kashechewan First Nation on July 17 complaining of back pain, the nurses sent him home with Tylenol and Advil. They didn't help. Over the following month, the 29-year-old made five trips to the same Northwestern Ontario medical facility and reported the same symptoms. Each appointment resulted in an offer of painkillers. On the fifth visit, his mother, Jane, demanded that her son be given a blood test. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/slow-diagnosis-of-first...

  • When It Comes to Sexual Harassment, Schools Are Not Immune

    Nov 28, 2017

Early in Kelly Wickham Hurst’s teaching career, some of her colleagues warned her about an older male coworker. He came in early and sometimes cornered women, telling inappropriate jokes that at times led to uncomfortable physical contact he brushed off as accidental, they said. The Springfield, Ill., middle school had a wave of young, newly hired female teachers that year, and they believed its administration didn’t take their concerns about the man seriously, Hurst said. https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2017/11/29/when-i...
