Jeremy Tieken has always wanted to go muskie fishing because he hadn’t caught one yet. That all changed Nov. 1. He and his father, Daniel, went out on an area lake with Kevin Cochran’s Musky Guide Service out of Bemidji for Jeremy’s eighth birthday. “He is very passionate and has a skill level above average for an 8-year-old fisherman,” his dad said. http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/outdoors/fishing/3891216-bemidji-second-grader-lands-55-inch-muskie-during-birthday-trip...
The firearms deer season is over in the Bemidji area, but bow hunters are allowed to continue deer hunting until Dec. 31. There are also an increasing number of deer hunters who prefer the solitude of hunting later in the season and will hunt the muzzleloader deer season, which begins Saturday and runs through Dec. 13. Deer hunting with a muzzleloader is a one-shot proposition, much like hunting with a crossbow or compound bow. Hunters use open sights on muzzleloaders and have to reload the gun after each shot. Muzzleloaders typically take...

Months into a revived debate over the name of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, there’s been lots of heat but not much progress toward resolving whether to substitute a Dakota or other name. Still, on Thanksgiving, which prompts many Americans to reflect on the history of white settlers and the native population they encountered, there’s been some clarification of how the issue may be resolved. http://www.startribune.com/lake-calhoun-naming-issue-prompts-much-debate-but-little-movement/355197351/...
Two years before Gov. Mark Dayton said that he “strongly believed” in the constitutionality of Minnesota’s legally questionable sex offender incarcerations, the DFL governor just as strongly criticized the program for practices he said left many offenders “warehoused forever” beyond their prison terms. This week, U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank rejected the state’s request that he delay his own court-ordered reforms to the controversial Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP). The state immediately filed another appeal to stay...

As Coloradans around the state gather today to enjoy Thanksgiving football, another group is planning to determine how to handle schools that use mascots some say disparage Native Americans. The targeting of Canada’s aboriginal women by serial killers demands specific action to protect them from “sick and dangerous” people who have found novel ways to seek out their victims, the federal Indigenous Affairs Minister says. In an interview with The Globe and Mail on Thursday, Carolyn Bennett deemed it “hugely important” that the country now has a clearer picture of the rate at which aboriginal women are being preyed upon by serial killers. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/action-needed-to-prote...

The story behind Thanksgiving is one that has been twisted into fairy tale. The real history of Thanksgiving is one of disease and enslavement demolishing indigenous populations. Europeans came to what is now the state of Connecticut and killed 700 indigenous people during their annual Green Corn Festival, which was their Thanksgiving, in 1637. The slaughter, according to the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony at the time of the killings, called for a true “day of Thanksgiving.” http://mashable.com/2015/11/26/nativ...
