  • Native American voters across Minnesota turned out to oust Trump

    Nov 23, 2020

Life as a Native woman in rural Minnesota was never easy for Nancy Beaulieu, but it got harder after 2016. She saw racial tensions between some white residents and Native Americans in her northern Minnesota community spill out into the open after the election of Donald Trump in 2016. In January, Beltrami County became one of the first in the nation to vote to ban refugees from resettling there. At a September rally in Bemidji, Minn., a mostly white crowd of thousands cheered when Trump looked ou...

  • Trump's legal team cried vote fraud, but courts found none

    Nov 23, 2020

PHILADELPHIA - As they frantically searched for ways to salvage President Donald Trump's failed reelection bid, his campaign pursued a dizzying game of legal hopscotch across six states that centered on the biggest prize of all: Pennsylvania. The strategy may have played well in front of television cameras and on talk radio to Trump's supporters. But it has proved a disaster in court, where judges uniformly rejected their claims of vote fraud and found the campaign's legal work amateurish. In a...

  • 'No beds anywhere': Minnesota hospitals strained to limit by COVID-19

    Nov 23, 2020

One walk through Regions Hospital's COVID-19 intensive care unit reveals the scope of the medical crisis emerging from a fast-spreading pandemic. Sixteen sliding glass doors are all closed, and behind each lies a patient struggling to breathe. Almost all are on ventilators because their lungs are too weak to work on their own. Clear tubes carry oxygen into their throats and chests, which mechanically rise and fall as their bodies lie still. On this Thursday morning, 28 COVID-19 patients are in...

The Vikings' playoff hopes, after a late afternoon high-wire act against the Cowboys on Sunday, are on life support. The reasons they are 4-6, and not 5-5, were too many for Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson to overcome. They fell 31-28 to the Cowboys in a game filled with lead changes, magnificent catches from Vikings and Cowboys receivers and hard-to-explain penalties that keep the game close ended with the Vikings' inability to get a defensive stop. "I don't think we played well...

  • Red Lake Nation uses crowdfunding to bet big on solar energy

    Nov 23, 2020

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Red Lake Nation is betting big on solar energy. The Chippewa Indian reservation in northern Minnesota will soon be home to one of the region's largest solar arrays, a 240-kilowatt installation atop a workforce training center that will generate about half the building's electricity needs. The real power, though, could be in the emerging model to use solar, microgrids, and a tribal-run utility as a path to energy sovereignty. "We have to prove that we can do this and we have to do this not only for ourselves but for o...

  • Biden promised teachers a raise, but education reforms will be a big lift in pandemic

    Nov 23, 2020

President-elect Joe Biden promised to give teachers a pay raise and direct more money to schools that serve low-income children, but those education reforms will have to take a back seat to emergency needs as schools fight to save teacher jobs and close funding gaps during the pandemic. Education groups say that more than half a million teachers and school personnel have been laid off and more turmoil is on the horizon unless the federal government steps in with emergency funding. Those critical needs must be addressed first, they said, over...
