Her father taught her to play the guitar when she was in the first grade, and two years after that she taught herself piano and began writing songs. After attending high school and a community college, she teamed with guitarist Don Robinson and they made the 1989 album For the Children, which was released regionally. She spent a year in the...

A strong farm economy and vibrant communities are the key to the success of rural Minnesota. And the lifeblood for our rural communities is local government aid (LGA), state monies that enable cities to provide high quality “essential” services while keeping property taxes affordable. LGA allows rural cities to have the same level of services as much wealthier metro cities at roughly the same cost. Senior citizens, families and businesses benefit greatly in rural Minnesota from LGA and direct property tax relief for homeowners. In 2013-14, und...
BEMIDJI—The possibility of a YMCA in Bemidji is real enough that a local 6-year-old recently asked his mother if they would be able to swim for free. "No," answered Tina Johnson, who has spent the past few years leading the effort to build a family recreation center here. "We'll have to pay like everyone else." http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/news/local/3888328-still-working-toward-y-local-group-achieves-nonprofit-status-they-look-bring-ymca...

Hospitals across Minnesota are re-examining their security precautions amid an increase in violence associated with unstable psychiatric patients and fallout from the October shooting of a deputy by a patient in St. Cloud. Hospital officials say the number of nurses and aides injured by patients or visitors spiked last year, and the St. Cloud Hospital shooting is the second hospital assault in 12 months that ended in a fatality. None had been reported by hospitals in 11 prior years. http://www.startribune.com/st-cloud-hospit...
WASHINGTON — With time running out on open enrollment season, many seniors are facing sharply higher premiums for Medicare's popular prescription drug program. The reason: rising drug costs have overtaken a long stretch of stable premiums. Beneficiaries have until Dec. 7 to see if there's a lower-cost plan that will cover their medications in 2016. Consumer advocates and experts say it will pay to shop around this sign-up season. http://www.startribune.com/experts-foresee-big-premium-increases-for-medicare-drug-plan/35294189...

PITTSBURGH – Around 8 a.m. at a cavernous warehouse outside Pittsburgh recently, about four dozen delivery drivers for United Parcel Service got their first look at the scheduled drop-offs for the day. Prepping for roughly 9-hour shifts with anywhere from 50 to 150 stops, it could have been — and, until recently, was — a daunting start, as drivers had to calculate how best to juggle the day’s load while negotiating such Pittsburgh-area traffic snarls as bridges, tunnels and sudden road closures. http://www.startribune.com/u...
