  • Volunteer search for Rose Downwind set for Saturday

    BEMIDJI -- The family of Rose Downwind is calling for volunteers to help with a ground search Saturday for the Redby woman and mother of five who has been missing more than three weeks. A Facebook page, Looking for Rose, has been created by Dwa Weston, Downwind's cousin and a family spokesperson. Volunteers are asked to meet Saturday at 10 a.m. at Newby's Market at state Highway 15 and Island View Road north of Bemidji.     RED LAKE—Giggles and laughter were heard coming from brightly colored puffs of energy bopping around on the chilly playground Thursday afternoon at Red Lake Early Childhood Education.     ST. PAUL -- Gov. Mark Dayton wants Minnesota lawmakers to meet in a special legislative session to extend unemployment benefits for laid-off miners. The state projects that 596 miners will run out of regular unemployment payments before the Legislature is slated to return to work on March 8. PAUL -- Preliminary firearms deer harvest numbers for the opening weekend through Monday in Minnesota was 68,401, up 6.3 percent from last year, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday. The statewide buck harvest was up 8.5 percent and made up 68 percent of total harvest.   • Veteran housing owners could get cash

    ST. PAUL -- A Minnesota landlord who rents to a homeless veteran could get $1,000. The state Veterans' Affairs Department and community leaders across Minnesota committed earlier this year to end veteran homelessness before 2016. The $1,000 incentive is part of the effort. The money is available to landlords who rent to veterans listed on the Minnesota Homeless Veterans Registry.
