WILMINGTON, Del. - President-elect Joe Biden signaled on Sunday he plans to move quickly to build out his government, focusing first on the raging pandemic that will likely dominate the early days of his administration. Biden named a former surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, and a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, David Kessler, as co-chairs of a coronavirus working group set to get started, with other members expected to be announced Monday. Transition team officials said that...
WASHINGTON - Democrat Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States on Saturday and offered himself to the nation as a leader who "seeks not to divide, but to unify" a country gripped by a historic pandemic and a confluence of economic and social turmoil. "I sought this office to restore the soul of America," Biden said in a prime-time victory speech not far from his Delaware home, "and to make America respected around the world again and to unite...
After a bitter election campaign that capped a tumultuous four years under President Donald Trump, Minnesotans on both sides of the political divide held out hope that President-elect Joe Biden can help America come together again. "Our country needs to start working together. I pray for it: Stop the hate," said Jeanne Sheehan of Austin, Minn., a Trump voter. "Never going to get anywhere with rioting and arguments and fighting. "I don't want people to judge anybody else by for whom they voted,"...
President-elect Joe Biden is planning to quickly sign a series of executive orders after being sworn into office on Jan. 20, immediately forecasting that the country’s politics have shifted and that his presidency will be guided by radically different priorities. He will rejoin the Paris climate accords, according to those close to his campaign and commitments he has made in recent months, and he will reverse President Trump’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization. He will repeal the ban on immigration from many Muslim-majority...
COVID-19 is sweeping across Minnesota at an unprecedented pace, breaking records for new cases and daily deaths and raising concerns over the ability of hospitals to keep up. Saturday's tally of 4,647 new cases - a figure that would have easily set a record during the first eight months of the pandemic - wasn't even close to the biggest single-day count of the past week. For the seven-day period ending Saturday, Minnesota reported more than 25,000 new COVID-19 cases, or more than 10% of the...
Two census takers told The Associated Press that their supervisors pressured them to enter false information into a computer system about homes they had not visited so they could close cases during the waning days of the once-a-decade national headcount. Maria Arce said her supervisor in Massachusetts offered step-by-step instructions in how to trick the system. She said she felt guilty about lying, but she did not want to disobey her supervisors, who kept repeating that they were under...
A major investment by the Trump campaign that fueled unprecedented get-out-the-vote efforts in Minnesota was not enough to turn the state red, leaving conservative activists and GOP operatives wondering how to recapture political relevance at the statewide level. While Republicans made gains in some suburban and rural legislative districts, they lost both of the election's statewide races - for the White House and the U.S. Senate - by decisive margins. "If you're going to win at the top of the...
Thirty-three years ago, he was the fast-talking junior senator from Delaware with a chip on his shoulder, desperate to prove his gravitas during a brief, ill-fated presidential run. The next time around, in 2008, he was the seasoned foreign policy hand and veteran lawmaker who strained to capture the imagination of Democratic presidential primary voters. As he weighed a third attempt at the presidency last year, many Democrats feared he was too late. Too old, too moderate, too meandering to...

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - With coronavirus cases running rampant in the Dakotas and elected leaders refusing to forcefully intervene, the burden of pushing people to take the virus seriously has increasingly been put on the families of those who have died. The ranks of those who know what it means to lose someone they love to COVID-19 are on the rise. North Dakota and South Dakota have the nation's worst rate of deaths per capita over the last 30 days. Despite advances in treating COVID-19 patients, h...

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump never admits defeat. But he faces a stark choice now that Democrat Joe Biden has won the White House: Concede graciously for the sake of the nation or don't - and get evicted anyway. After nearly four tortured days of counting yielded a victory for Biden, Trump was still insisting the race was not over. He threw out baseless allegations that the election wasn't fair and "illegal" votes were counted, promised a flurry of legal action and fired off all-caps...
The final seconds bled off the clock at U.S. Bank Stadium, and the last non-quarterback to win an NFL MVP award walked across the same plot of land he used to electrify each week, in search of the 25-year-old who'd just snatched one of his many Vikings franchise records. Adrian Peterson's most brilliant work in the NFL came as he dragged a nondescript Vikings team to the playoffs in 2012, running for 1,322 yards in the final eight games of a 2,097-yard season and coming within 8 yards of Eric...
For most of the past decade, Republicans and Democrats at the Minnesota State Capitol have clashed over budget deficits and haggled over taxes and spending. At times, they have even allowed bipartisan policy goals on infrastructure and health care to fall prey to partisan gridlock. In Tuesday's election, Minnesota voters opted for at least two years of more of the same, delivering Republicans a narrow majority in the Senate and Democrats control in the House. "It keeps some balance in," said...
