  • Test your flu knowledge with this quick quiz

    Nov 2, 2015

Defense wins the game, the saying goes, and that strategy also is the key to staying healthy during flu season. The Man vs. Achoo contest is officially underway and is expected to plague us through May. So far, only a few cases of flu have been reported in Minnesota, said Kris Ehresmann, director of infectious disease, epidemiology, prevention and control at the Minnesota Department of Health. But with the wily virus capable of spreading quickly and striking hard — last year 10 children in Minnesota died — it’s never too early to start plann...

  • More jobs needed in the right places

    Nov 2, 2015

Inviting more stoners to town, as the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe intends to do with its pot lounge, would be tourism. That is, until the federal government sends in bulldozers, as happened Oct. 23 at the hemp farm of the Menominee Tribe in Wisconsin. Meanwhile the governor’s Blue Ribbon task force on K-12 schools wants the state sales tax increased, so South Dakota can pay teachers more and get out of last place nationally. http://www.capjournal.com/opinions/more-jobs-needed-in-the-right-places/article_e1384a34-8113-11e5-a...

  • Tribes help regrow milkweed to restore monarch butterflies

    Nov 2, 2015

OKLAHOMA CITY — Chip Taylor never expected to become a landscape ecologist. But as he watched monarch butterflies on a downward spiral — as a powerful herbicide killed off the only plant that feeds their caterpillar — he realized he needed to find places to grow milkweed in order to save the orange-and-black butterfly. Twenty years ago, a billion monarchs flittered through the skies. Their population plunged a staggering 95 percent by the end of last year, when about 56 million remained. • What can entrepreneurs learn from Native American tribes? Everything

    Nov 2, 2015

When you consider where American technology innovation is happening in the United States, places like Silicon Valley or big cities on the east and west coasts might come to mind. As a fintech entrepreneur providing services to online lenders, my experience has found a thriving business community in places you might not think to look: American Indian Reservations. Many American Indian tribes have been enormously successful launching sustainable businesses in high-growth industries. These tribes owe their success to the creation of well-fueled...

Since then the tribe has been on a fast track to build a marijuana lounge, saying anyone 21 and over will be able to buy and use whether they're a tribal member or not. A change in federal law opened the door for the tribe to do this. But state law says marijuana is still very much an illegal substance. And those who enforce those laws say a very big problem is headed our way....
