Sen. Elizabeth Warren took aim at charter schools on Monday as she rolled out her presidential bid's much-anticipated K-12 education plan, which seeks hundreds of billions of dollars in new federal funding for traditional public schools. Warren's proposal, which would cost some $800 billion over 10 years, would significantly expand federal support for public education and also fight the "corporatization" and "privatization" of public schools. https://www.politico.com/news/201...
With a fourth day of classes canceled and dozens of city soccer teams forced to forfeit state playoff games, the Chicago teachers strike is stretching on to Tuesday — and potentially much longer — as union leaders say their hopes have been “dashed” for a quick resolution. Despite optimism from both sides heading into the day, the turn for the worse started early Monday, union officials said, when Mayor Lori Lightfoot urged the union to end its strike and send teachers back to work while negotiations continue. https:/...
MARKSVILLE, La. — On a chilly March morning, Liza Jacobs stood in the Marksville High School parking lot, bullhorn in hand, herding straggling students into the low brick building before the 7:30 a.m. bell. She followed the last of the teenagers into the school, past the metal detector, still clutching her bullhorn. A teenager rushed down the hallway to his first class. “You better take that hat off your head,” she called after him, smiling through the stern command. https://hechingerreport.org/progress-in-the-deep-sou...
PORTLAND, Maine — A high school activist’s comment about rape posted on a bathroom mirror represents constitutionally protected free speech — and punishing her would discourage young victims from coming forward, an attorney said Monday. The sticky note that proclaimed “There’s a rapist in our school and you know who it is” aimed to call attention to the unaddressed problem of sexual assaults, said Emma Bond from the American Civil Liberties of Maine. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/judge-asked-to-stop-stu...

Nobody likes getting shots. But most of us only have to face needles occasionally, for a seasonal flu vaccine or routine blood test. People with some forms of diabetes, on the other hand, have to inject themselves with insulin two to four times a day just to stay alive. A new kind of pill developed at MIT could change all that. The capsule is swallowed and passes through the stomach whole, then opens in the small intestine to reveal "microneedles" that attach to the intestine surface and...

The top U.S. envoy to Ukraine told House impeachment investigators on Tuesday that President Donald Trump sought to withhold critical military aid to Ukraine and refuse a White House meeting with the country’s president unless he pursued politically motivated investigations into Trump’s rivals. The diplomat, William Taylor, painted a damaging portrait of events that directly tied Trump to a quid pro quo with Ukraine, according to his prepared remarks obtained by POLITICO and his responses to questions as described by sources in the room...
When the Metropolitan Council opened bids last summer to build a 400,000-square-foot Metro Transit bus garage in Minneapolis, Brooklyn Park-based utility contractor PWS appeared to be a shoo-in to work on the project. PWS, a Native American-owned business, was part of two contractor teams bidding on the project: one led by Knutson Construction and another by Adolfson & Peterson. A&P submitted the apparent low bid of $114.1 million and Knutson was right behind at $114.48 million. https://finance-commerce.com/2019/10/decision-...
