This report was sponsored by FosterEd Arizona and the Arizona Community Foundation in the hopes of bringing to light the challenges foster children face academically. • Trump doubles down on accusations of rigged election; Pence takes softer line

    Oct 17, 2016

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump on Sunday intensified his claims that the presidential campaign is “rigged” against him, sowing doubts about the integrity of the country’s democratic process even as his own running mate and other GOP leaders sought to assure voters they viewed the election as legitimate. “The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary — but also at many polling places — SAD,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Sunday. He made his incendiary claim just hours after his running mate, I...

  • FDA rules allow medical device makers to keep injuries under wraps

    Oct 17, 2016

Makers of medical devices, from heart valves to drug pumps, are required to tell the U.S. Food and Drug Administration whenever they learn that a product may have injured someone. Those reports are usually available to patients and their doctors. But a Star Tribune analysis of recently obtained data shows that the FDA has accepted late reports that cover hundreds of thousands of incidents, sometimes years after the fact, and has created a program that lets device makers keep the details out of view. For example, the FDA let Illinois-based...

  • Iraqi forces launch military push to drive IS from Mosul

    Oct 17, 2016

KHAZER, Iraq — Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led airstrikes launched coordinated military operations early Monday as the long-awaited fight to wrest the northern city of Mosul from Islamic State fighters got underway. But the battle is likely to be long and it was unclear when the troops would enter the city itself. The fate of more than a million civilians trapped inside Mosul will also be critical as the battle intensifies in the days and weeks ahead amid concerns that IS could use them as human shields. Convoys of Iraqi, Kurdish a...

James “Jimmy” Anderst, owner of the Narrows in Navarre, crashed in Orono about 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 while riding on County Road 19 near Red Oak Lane, according to the sheriff’s and medical examiner’s offices for Hennepin County. Anderst, 63, who lived in Mound, died Thursday at Hennepin County Medical Center. http://www.startribune.com/motorcycle-crash-kills-owner-of...

  • Minneapolis medical conference will address why men and women are treated differently for heart attacks

    Oct 17, 2016

Men and women are different when it comes to matters of the heart. And that's not relationship advice. Women's hearts are more susceptible to certain kinds of diseases, and they produce symptoms that can lead to different care in emergency situations than men would get. Rather than feeling the classic complaint of extreme pressure in the chest during a heart attack, some women feel shortness of breath or upper-abdominal pain that they or their doctors may chalk up to acid reflux or anxiety. Even though coronary heart disease is the No. 1...

  • Emails show Clinton treading lightly with Wall Street talks

    Oct 17, 2016

WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton generally avoided direct criticism of Wall Street as she examined the causes and responses to the financial meltdown during a series of paid speeches to Goldman Sachs, according to transcripts disclosed by WikiLeaks. Three transcripts released Saturday as part of the hack of her campaign chairman's emails did not contain any new bombshells showing she was unduly influenced by contributions from the banking industry, as her primary rival Bernie Sanders had suggested. Still, her soft-handed approach in the speeches w...

  • McMullin, other third-party presidential candidates also on Minnesota ballot

    Oct 17, 2016

Minnesota supporters of independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin have been hustling in recent days to elevate his profile here as he vaults to the front ranks of third-party alternatives. As Republican Donald Trump’s increasingly scandal-plagued candidacy plummets in the polls, supporters see McMullin as an option for conservatives who are appalled by Trump but unwilling to vote for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. It’s a hope shared by two other minor-party candidates on the Minnesota ballot in November, Libertarian Gary Joh...

  • Reports: Chibok girls swapped for detainees, ransom or both?

    Oct 17, 2016

JOHANNESBURG — Conflicting reports emerged Friday about whether the first negotiated release of some Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria in 2014 involved a ransom payment, a prisoner swap for Islamic extremist commanders, or both. A Nigerian hostage negotiator who was not involved in Thursday's release told The Associated Press a "handsome ransom" in the millions of dollars was paid by Switzerland's government on behalf of Nigerian authorities. He said the Swiss would recoup the money from some $321 million it had said it w...

  • First Amendment and Sioux Nation Under Siege

    Oct 17, 2016

If completed, the $3.8 billion dollar Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) would carry 500,000 barrels of crude oil 1,168-miles southeast from the Bakken shale fields to Illinois. Owned and operated by Energy Transfer Partners, DAPL would threaten the water supplies for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, not to mention their spiritual identity. Since August, DAPL has faced peaceful resistance from the tribe and members of at least 200 indigenous nations and supporters from across the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe. National interest in events at...

  • Pipeline protest makes ripples nationally, worldwide

    Oct 17, 2016

BISMARCK – In New York, more than 150 people assembled in a flash mob at a Syracuse shopping mall. In Nevada, a pickup truck plowed through a crowd of mostly American Indian demonstrators in downtown Reno. And in North Dakota, Minnesota and two other states, activists face charges of tampering with valves on five pipelines carrying Canadian crude oil into the United States, leading to several arrests. http://www.inforum.com/news/north-dakota/4136928-pipeline-protest-makes-ripples-nationally-worldwide...

  • Pipeline work resumes near site of protest

    Oct 17, 2016

Shailene was among 26 protestors who were arrested after police broke up their peaceful protest. Her Instagram post was a great follow-up to her past posts regarding her protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Their goal is to keep things peaceful as both protesters and counter-protesters who support the pipeline express their views without infringing on either side's speech rights, Spoden said. http://crcconnection.com/2016/10/16/pipeline-work-resumes-near-site-of-protest.html...

  • Why the Dakota pipeline protest still has traction

    Oct 17, 2016

As the weather gets cold, the nearly 7,000 people camping out in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline are settling in for the winter. Although the protest has gone on for a month and a half now, the movement has only gained momentum with new campers arriving every day and “weekend warriors” joining in whenever they can. In addition to drawing attention to the disproportionate consequences native people face from the proliferation of the energy industry, the protests have also served as a platf...

Linda Redsky, a Shoal Lake 40 band member, said people in the community are now having to travel by boat to get out of the community, but the boat has no life jackets and only runs during the day. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/broken-ferry-on-shoal-lake-40-leaves-community-in-limbo-1.3806590...

  • 2nd Indigenous Day becomes platform for justice

    Oct 17, 2016

As hundreds of people, mostly tribal members, marched through downtown celebrating the 2nd Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday night, their voices cried out for justice. A collective voice comprised of the marchers rose above the federal and county courthouses, police station, and city hall. Holding up signs that read “NODAPL,” “Respect Our Water and Culture,” and “End Colonialism and Imperialism,” marchers expressed support for the Standing Rock Sioux Nation’s fight against the North Dakota Access Pipeline construction. Just the day before, a...

  • MMIW case ends with difficult answers for family decades after death

    Oct 17, 2016

It took longer than Barbara Kate Keam's lifetime for her family to finally find out what happened the night she was beaten to death. Keam, 21, of Norway House, Man., was found beaten to death in the remote community on June 7, 1981. Her husband was charged with her death, but he committed suicide before he went to trial, and her family was never sure how she died. http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/indigenous/barbara-keam-family-quest-1.3800637...

  • Payday loans in regulators' cross hairs

A not-so-quiet battle is being waged among regulators, consumer advocates and industry players over who best represents the interests of the 12 million Americans who use payday loans for everything from emergency car repairs to everyday expenses. As I wrote in a recent column, alternatives to payday loans have been introduced to offset what critics view as predatory products, with much of the opposition led by faith-based organizations frustrated with regulators' failure to stem the growth of the $38.5 billion industry. Critics charge that...

  • Tribe says Connecticut owes it $613M for land taken in 1800s

    Oct 17, 2016

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut-based Native American tribe is suing the state for at least $613 million in damages for land it says was taken from the tribal reservation more than a century ago. The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation said in the suit filed Thursday the state took 2,000 acres it was managing for the tribe without compensation between 1801 and 1918. Attorney Austin Tighe, a lawyer representing the Kent-based tribe, said the Schaghticokes still don't have a full accounting of the property from the state and that the actual amount...
