    LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts says he's determined to address the problems that plague the village of Whiteclay and is working with a Native American activist to seek solutions. Whiteclay's four beer stores sell primarily to residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation across the border in South Dakota, home of the Oglala Lakota Nation.     Now that it has an Indigenous Peoples Day, Minneapolis will focus some of its historic preservation efforts on better understanding its American Indian past. The city’s historic preservation staff will oversee the study of native people in the area both before and since white exploration and settlement.     Evelyn Inez Garrett and Edwin Cornelius Garrett Jr. of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation died within three days of each other at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. Ms. Garrett died on October 1, and three days later her husband, devastated by the death of his wife, died on October 4. Both were 89.   • Grass fire prompts evacuation of small Standing Rock town in North Dakota

    A grass fire fanned by strong winds destroyed buildings in Cannon Ball and prompted the evacuation of the town on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. There were no reports of injuries in the Sunday afternoon fire, but the flames burned at least three homes and a church.
