  • Council for Cherokee Nation approves record $1.52 billion budget

    The Council of the Cherokee Nation has approved a record $1.52 billion general operating budget for fiscal year 2021, tribal officials announced Friday. The $1.52 billion budget is considerably higher than the current fiscal year’s $1.16 billion budget which set the previous record, said Josh Newton, deputy executive director of Cherokee Nation Communications.   • New Jersey casinos record physical and digital profits since reopening

    New Jersey’s casinos and horse tracks are reporting winnings of $264.5 million in the month of July 2020 after reopening during the coronavirus outbreak. While the amount was down nearly 21% from July of 2019, the casinos are glad to be operational. Figures released last week by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reflect the first month of resumed operations that the casinos and tracks were permitted to undertake at only 25% capacity.     An impeachment hearing will be held in September after the president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe was accused of having inappropriate contact with a 17-year-old boy. The complaint against Julian Bear Runner was sent to the Secretary's Office on Aug. 19, said Secretary Jennifer Spotted Bear.     SALAMANCA, N.Y. — The Seneca Nation in New York state is mourning three beloved tribal citizens. Ninety-one-year-old Norma Kennedy and her two daughters, 71-year-old Diane Kennedy and 65-year-old Cindy Mohr, died of COVID-19 within weeks of each other.
