All teachers will be on the frontlines when school buildings reopen. But in some cases, they might formally be considered essential workers, which means they'll be expected to continue to go to work even if they've been exposed to COVID-19. Backed by the White House, a handful of states have given the green light for teachers to be considered critical infrastructure workers, and in at least Tennessee and Florida, some districts already have put that policy in place. While most people who've...
Much like the nation itself, Native American colleges and universities across the country have a mixed approach as they open the fall semester amid the coronavirus pandemic. Some schools, such as Haskell Indian Nations University, decided in July to stay off campus with online instruction only. Others, such as the Institute of American Indian Arts, will have a mixture of virtual learning and on-campus classes. https://indiancountrytoday.com/news/native-colleges-take-mixed-approach-to-fall-semester-nB136MlqokKnaZHarGV-0Q...
When asked where you might find the largest face in the US, one might think of the Statue of Liberty, whose face is eight feet tall, or better yet, Mount Rushmore, which depicts the visages of four US presidents at around 60 feet or so. However, the real answer lies not far from the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. There were two questions that nagged at Kyla Blair when the school where she works, and that her children attend, restarted class. Would her kids be safe? And would she be able to help keep other kids safe? TAHOLAH, Wash - The Quinault Indian Nation (QIN) is closed to visitors in response to an increase in COVID-19 cases among households on the reservation. The shutdown was announced by the tribal government Saturday. Officials said the Nation reported its first positive COVID-19 case last week, which required some households to enter a 14-day quarantine period. The closure will be in effect through at least September 6 to ensure infections do not spread. https://www.king5.com/a...
Cowlitz Indian Tribe leader Bill Iyall last week stepped down from his role as general council chairman and chief operating officer, citing COVID-19 as a major factor in the decision. Iyall, 73, said in a video announcement on the tribe's Facebook page that he has a heart condition that requires extra caution and for him to stay home as much as possible during the pandemic. He said he's "ready for a break" but added that stepping down was a difficult decision. "It has been an honor to serve as...
One evening a few years ago, as the sun was setting over Southern California, Marsha Valencia and her husband returned from a walk in a nature reserve near their home. It was past closing time, and a park ranger in uniform was locking the gates. They ran to catch him, expecting a ticket—in addition to being late, they’d brought their dog, against the rules. The ranger scolded them amiably and made them promise to do better; then, to their surprise, he allowed them to drive through. Valencia, who identifies as Native American, then asked if she...
