  • Minnesota hunters and anglers now have more opportunities thanks to final U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rule expanding sporting access on refuges and hatcheries

    Aug 19, 2020

Since day one, the Trump administration has prioritized recreational access to public lands, particularly for hunting and fishing. These two great American pastimes have formed the bedrock of the nation’s wildlife conservation efforts, generating more dollars for habitat protection and restoration than any other outdoor pursuit. Today, the Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service helped grow that legacy by finalizing a rule to open additional hunting and fishing opportunities in Minnesota and across the country. This bri...

  • Millions of students - and their teachers - embark on vast experiment with distance learning

    Aug 19, 2020

Moving beyond pitched debates about whether kids should be in school or not, California schools are participating in a giant experiment never attempted in the state - or anywhere in the world for that matter. By Labor Day, nearly 6 million public school children will be taking all their classes online, along with hundreds of thousands more in private and parochial schools. So far, half of the state's 30 largest districts have started the school year in distance learning mode, and the rest will...

  • 'It's bittersweet': MPS begins the school year online amid coronavirus pandemic

    Aug 19, 2020

The hallways of Milwaukee School of Languages were empty Monday morning. There were no students excitedly catching up on their busy summer break. No lockers slamming or announcements over the loudspeaker. No one running to get to class on time. Spanish teacher Marielle Rivera sat in a sunny corner of her classroom, flags of the United States and Latin American countries overhead and Black Lives Matter posters on the front of her desk. And she laid out her expectations for the school year for her eighth-grade students, whose faces she sees on...

  • "This is exactly what we've been warning about": Why some school reopenings have backfired

    Aug 19, 2020

Many schools across the US gambled on offering in-person classes in early August, even as their states were still battling uncontrolled spread of Covid-19. In some of those schools, it hasn’t gone well. In Georgia’s Cherokee County School District, for example, there have been at least 80 positive cases since August 3, and more than 1,100 students, teachers, and staff have had to quarantine. At the high school in Paulding County School District, which came to national attention after photos of halls crowded with mostly maskless students wen...

  • As school starts, California districts try to improve virtual special education

    Aug 19, 2020

As schools in California begin re-opening virtually, state education officials have taken steps to improve distance learning for a group of students who were largely left behind in the spring: Those in special education. But some parents wonder if distance learning will ever work well for students with disabilities. The most significant new law, passed in June as part of the state budget, requires districts to craft distance learning plans for all students in special education, tailored to each...

Over the weekend, multiple groups have rallied on location as Governor Walz remained silent on refiling a critical lawsuit regarding Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline project failing to demonstrate future demand for its tar sands.
