    Aug 18, 2016

BEMIDJI -- Lisa Johnson, the director of women’s and children’s services at Sanford Bemidji, knows many pregnant women who use drugs avoid prenatal care out of fear. • Think teachers aren't paid enough? It's worse than you think

    Aug 18, 2016

Everybody knows that nobody goes into teaching to get rich, but teachers don’t expect to be penalized for their chosen profession. A new study finds that what is called the “teacher pay penalty” — the difference between teachers and comparable public workers — is bigger than ever. In 2015, the weekly wages of public school teachers in the United States were 17 percent lower than comparable college-educated professionals — and those most hurt are veteran teachers and male teachers. The study was done by Sylvia Allegretto and...

  • Failing schools will face harsher punishments sooner, Texas education commissioner says

    Aug 18, 2016

Failing schools will face tougher sanctions sooner as the state's education commissioner looks to cut the number of such schools in half over the next five years. The remedy most often used for struggling schools is the lightest touch, but that's usually the least effective, Commissioner Mike Morath told the Senate Education Committee during a hearing Tuesday morning. The harshest sanctions — which can include replacing campus staff or even district leadership — are the least-used option but the most effective, he said. "If the medicine...

  • State moving forward with plans to close failing schools

    Aug 18, 2016

Public education advocates are pushing back on plans by the Michigan School Reform Office to shutter a number of failing schools next June, saying the move would be unfairly based upon results of the state's new, rigorous standardized test. School officials were told by The Michigan Department of Education that they wouldn't be penalized based on student performance on last spring's M-STEP test. The idea was to collect three years of data from the exam -- thus far it's been given twice -- before using the results for policy decisions....
