  • Drought forces trout to be trucked from Central California hatchery to cooler lake water

    Aug 14, 2015

FRESNO, Calif. — Tons of rainbow trout had to be rescued from a Central California fish hatchery and moved by truck to cooler lake water, sparing them from the state's relentless drought, wildlife officials said Wednesday. About 80,000 pounds of trout were scooped up from the San Joaquin Hatchery near Fresno and hauled 30 miles uphill to Shaver Lake in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Temperatures in Millerton Lake, which flow through into the hatchery on the San Joaquin River, had reached nearly 70 degrees, threatening the trout's survival, The F...

  • 'Beyond Unacceptable': Judge OKs Uranium Mine at Grand Canyon

    Aug 14, 2015

In June, the Grand Canyon was named one of the "Most Endangered Places" in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. But the designation came just two months too late to possibly influence U.S. District Court Judge David Campbell. In April, he denied a request by the Havasupai tribe and a coalition of conservation groups to halt new uranium mining next to Grand Canyon National Park, just six miles from the Grand Canyon's South Rim. "We are very disappointed with the ruling by Judge Campbell in the Canyon Mine case," said...

  • Mandela, I'm Not: The Taxing Life of a Mother Coping With Trauma

    Aug 14, 2015

“Not everyone can be like Nelson Mandela. Some of us are just ordinary,” I explained to a younger relative who was complaining about my mother’s challenging behavior and lack of motherly love towards the family. I told her that my mother was raised in an Indian boarding school with precious little experience of family life or examples of good parenting skills. The mere fact that she actually stayed around and tried to mother us at all was a miracle in itself. The young relative had scoffed at this explanation and asked, “What about Nelson...

  • Sexual Abuse to Prison Pipeline Report: A Native Perspective

    Aug 14, 2015

I had my first pelvic exam at age 13 in a juvenile detention center. It was a frightening, humiliating experience. There was no mother, auntie or other supportive female present to guide me and explain the procedure. Afterwards, as my fellow inmates and I stood naked in a line to receive uniforms, the nurse told us that the doctor had been especially disgusted by our lack of hygiene. I was a runaway and had been sleeping rough for several nights. Sexually abused as a youngster, I was acting out. Although it happened more than 40 yeas ago, the m...

  • Giving our youth opportunities to succeed

    Aug 14, 2015

In my last column I talked about the Toby Eagle Bull Classic skateboarding competition and how beautiful of an event it is. This year was no different as hundreds of youth from all across the reservation descended upon the Toby Eagle Bull Memorial Wounded Knee Four Directions Skate Park in Pine Ridge. Although, I have enjoyed helping my family put on the competition each year, this year, I came to the realization that there is a skateboarding movement taking hold on the reservation thanks in large part to community members taking action. With t...

    Aug 14, 2015

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to stop handing out forms to Navajo citizens impacted by the Animas River spill that would effectively waive an individual’s rights to sue the agency for any future damages caused by contaminated water released from an abandoned mine upstream in Colorado last week. “The people that live up and down the river, the Navajo people, many do not speak English, and those that do may not comprehend legal language,” Begaye said. http://america.alja...

  • Montreal Café only hires Aboriginal employees

    Aug 14, 2015

The study, called "Cannabis use in relation to obesity and insulin resistance in the Inuit population," analysed health data from 786 adults in Nunavik, and the results took them by surprise.
