  • Claim: EPA trying to limit Navajo compensation for toxic spill

    Aug 13, 2015

The Navajo Nation is accusing the Environmental Protection Agency of trying to get its members to waive their rights to compensation from a multi-state toxic spill that the agency says it caused. The accusations came after Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye advised the tribal government's justice department to ready for legal action against the EPA for the catastrophic spill. "The federal government is asking our people to waive their future rights because they know without the waiver they will be paying millions to our people," said...

  • Cherokee court hands out first-ever sentence to non-Indian

    Aug 13, 2015

What in most courts would have been a simple case of violating a domestic violence protective order was a landmark moment for the Cherokee Tribal Court. John Michael Arkansas, 55, lives on the Qualla Boundary but is not an enrolled member of the tribe. Until this year, that meant that any crime he committed on Cherokee land would have to go to federal, rather than tribal, court. But when the newly reauthorized version of the Violence Against Women Act went into effect this spring, it gave tribal courts the authority to prosecute cases of...

  • LAWSUIT: Tribal flap with sheriff 162 years in making

    Aug 13, 2015

A dispute between an Indian tribe and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department over a recent spate of traffic tickets is rooted in actions taken by the federal government 162 years ago. The Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, which occupies land in the Mojave Desert along the Colorado River basin, contends in a federal lawsuit that deputies have no jurisdiction anywhere within the reservation boundaries to enforce minor motor vehicle moving violations, as well as licensing and registration violations, against tribal members. http...

  • 4 out of 5 parents don't install car seats correctly

    Aug 13, 2015

They never saw it coming. Shortly before sunrise on July 13, Alfonso Beltran was driving with his girlfriend, Letitia Greyeyes, and her 3-year-old daughter, Aria, in his Chevy Suburban. Two teens drove through a red light at full speed, broadsiding the Suburban. The Suburban tumbled across Van Buren and 67th Avenue. Amid a shower of glass, Aria flew out of her car seat through a side window onto the asphalt. The impact fractured her right arm and leg and skull. As the crumpled SUV pitched up against a traffic-light pole, the crushed roof and...

  • Winnebago, Omaha tribes demand resignation of top hospital, IHS officials

    Aug 13, 2015

SIOUX CITY | Leaders of the Winnebago and Omaha tribes of Nebraska demanded the resignation Wednesday of eight top officials connected with the troubled Native American hospital in Winnebago. Tribal leaders argued the dismissals would help restore Medicare funding the hospital lost last month, and ensure that patients receive adequate care. http://siouxcityjournal.com/news/winnebago-omaha-tribes-demand-resignation-of-top-hospital-ihs-officials/article_edfb3eaf-a00e-51af-986f-5fff625f167e.html...

  • When there's 'barely anything' to do in your community

    Aug 13, 2015

Less than a thousand people live in Webequie First Nation, a fly-in community in northern Ontario. Judith Beaver says almost half of them are young, just like her. At 15 years old, she knows how boredom can easily lead to trouble. "There's barely anything to do in Webequie," she said. http://www.cbc.ca/radio/newfire/brushes-with-boredom-1.3174328/when-there-s-barely-anything-to-do-in-your-community-1.3174570...

  • How Are Those Walleye Biting? On Minnesota Lake, They're Not

    Aug 13, 2015

GARRISON, Minn. — Along the rocky shore of Mille Lacs Lake on a recent morning, flat-bottomed fishing boats were idle in their docks. No customers wandered into a bait shop selling night crawlers, minnows and jumbo leeches. The restaurant at Twin Pines Resort was hushed and nearly empty, despite the postcard-perfect views of the vast, sparkling lake it offers from the patio. And it was no mystery why. That morning, it had become illegal to fish here for walleye, the most treasured fish in Minnesota, on Mille Lacs Lake, perhaps the most f...

De Los Santos has maintained that Ayala was killed in late August 2011 by the...

  • Edmonton Oilers draft pick Ethan Bear trades hockey stick for ball glove

    Aug 13, 2015

Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Danny Ainge — all three were athletes known for playing two sports at the highest level. Ethan Bear shrugs off the suggestion that he might follow in their footsteps. "[Growing up] if there was a ball tournament or a hockey tournament, I'd rather go to the hockey tournament," said the 18-year-old Bear, who was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in this June's NHL Entry Draft but is currently playing softball at the Saskatchewan First Nations Summer Games. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/edmont...
