  • What's happened in the rural school district Obama fought to save

    Aug 11, 2016

DILLON, S.C. — In 2007, when Sen. Barack Obama was running for president, he visited the public schools here in flat, sandy Dillon County, part of South Carolina’s so-called “Corridor of Shame,” a poor region that stretches from north to south along Interstate 95. Obama toured the old J.V. Martin Middle School, part of which dated to 1896 and was still in use. The building still had a furnace fueled by coal. Students in Dillon had little access to Advanced Placement courses, art and music; and teacher salaries were much lower than in other p...

  • A Public-School Paradox

    Aug 11, 2016

When President Jimmy Carter assumed office in 1977, he did something remarkable: He enrolled his 9-year-old daughter, Amy, in a predominantly black Washington, D.C., public school. The move was symbolic, a commitment the Democrat from Georgia had made even before he securing the presidency. In his presidential-nomination acceptance speech the previous year, Carter criticized “exclusive private schools that allow the children of the political and economic elite to avoid public schools that are considered dangerous or inferior.” Amy became the...

  • Baltimore County Board of Education passes heat closure policy

    Aug 11, 2016

Baltimore County's superintendent of schools now has a clear directive for when to close non-air conditioned schools — it's when the heat index reaches 90 degrees. The Baltimore County Public Schools Board of Education passed a policy Tuesday directing the superintendent to close non-airconditioned schools if the heat index is forecast to reach 90 degrees by 11 a.m. When possible, the closure should be announced by 8 p.m. the preceding night. If the heat index is forecast to reach 90 degrees by 2 p.m., the superintendent is directed under t...

  • Bipartisan group of state lawmakers calls for big changes to improve U.S. public schools

    Aug 11, 2016

What will it take for U.S. schools to improve — not incrementally, but dramatically? That’s the question that a bipartisan group of state lawmakers from around the country set out to answer two years ago, when they embarked on a study of the world’s highest-performing school systems. They compiled their answers in a report released Tuesday at the annual summit of the National Conference of State Legislatures. “The bad news is most state education systems are falling dangerously behind the world in a number of international compari...

  • Kansas graduation rate too low, education commissioner says

    Aug 11, 2016

Kansas must work with students and families to improve high school graduation rates, education commissioner Randy Watson said Tuesday, while highlighting challenges the state faces, including high turnover among superintendents and principals. Eighty-six percent of Kansas high-schoolers finish high school on time. Fewer than 1 percent more finish high school within five years instead of four. “Eight-six isn’t good enough,” Watson told the Kansas State Board of Education. http://cjonline.com/news/2016-08-09/kansas-graduation-...
