  • Walleye quota met, but Lake Mille Lacs to remain open for catch-and-release

    Aug 10, 2016

Gov. Mark Dayton has stepped into the management of Minnesota's premier walleye lake by allowing Mille Lacs' fishing season to continue — under a catch-and-release rule — even after anglers have surpassed a controversial quota established with Indian tribes. It's the first time a governor has interceded since Minnesota began co-managing Mille Lacs with local Chippewa tribes nearly 20 years ago. "Closing the walleye fishing season on Mille Lacs would devastate area businesses and communities," Dayton said Tuesday. "The state's fisheries exp...

  • Industrial chemicals threaten water supplies for 6 million people

    Aug 10, 2016

Drinking water supplies serving more than 6 million Americans contain unsafe levels of a widely used class of industrial chemicals linked to potentially serious health problems, according to a new study from Harvard University researchers. The chemicals — known as polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS — have been used for decades in industrial and commercial products, including nonstick coatings on pans, food wrappers, water-repellent clothing and firefighting foam. Long-term exposure has been linked to increased risks of kid...

  • Gov. Dayton made right decision on keeping Mille Lacs open for walleye fishing

    Aug 10, 2016

History has shown that politicians who interfere with natural resource management get things wrong more often than not. Better, by far, to have professionals trained in wildlife and fishery sciences, and related fields, to decide whether a species should be harvested or protected. Ditto the management of relevant habitats. Of course only the naive believe major natural resource decisions are founded in science alone. Sociology often plays a role. Also culture. And history. And heritage … And politics. http://www.startribune....

    Aug 10, 2016

SALT LAKE CITY — A federal appeals court expressed frustration at issuing 40 years worth of legal opinions on tribal boundary lawsuits, only to have the cases keep coming back. “We’re beginning to think we have an inkling of Sisyphus’s fate,” the court wrote in an opinion issued Tuesday. The three judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vented in its opinion involving a jurisdictional boundary dispute between the eastern Utah town of Myton and the Ute Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. http://fox13now.c...

    Aug 10, 2016

LINCOLN — The state should hire a full-time law enforcement officer in Whiteclay, Nebraska, and open an alcohol detox center to clean up the notorious border town, an ad hoc committee formed by Gov. Pete Ricketts has recommended. The recommendations, revealed publicly on Tuesday, prompted a group of advocates to renew its call to close down the beer stores in Whiteclay and inspired a state senator to voice optimism that improvements might actually happen. “I think there’s a lot of hope about what we can do in this area,” said State Sen. Pa...
