  • Feds propose punishing high opt-out schools

    Aug 2, 2016

A looming deadline for public comment on proposed changes to federal education policy, including consequences to participation in opting out of testing, has sparked outcry from parents, legislators and education groups. The new regulations, when adopted, would explain how states and school districts must implement the Every Student Succeeds Act, a federal law passed by Congress in December 2015 to replace the No Child Left Behind Law. The new law was aimed at relaxing federal control of education policy and giving more flexibility to the...

  • Not less, but 'better' testing in North Dakota schools

    Aug 2, 2016

BISMARCK—In Bismarck, kindergartners are tested seven times a year. In Mandan, N.D., they take five. Some of the assessments are short — one to two minutes long that require students to read a passage or complete several math questions. And while students statewide spend, on average, less than 1 percent of their classroom time testing, the number and time spent on tests is still concerning, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler said. Many schools are administering more tests than required under state and federal law. In...

  • Minnesota students with criminal history face stigma

    Aug 2, 2016

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — Nathan Anderson admits he made some "stupid choices" years ago. He wants to enter a profession where he can help people avoid hardships with school and work, the St. Cloud Times (http://on.sctimes.com/2a6Tn8p ) reported. But the St. Cloud State University student can't. "Right now, because of my criminal background, I have to put some of my education on hold," he said. http://www.chron.com/news/education/article/Minnesota-students-with-criminal-history-face-8750818.php...

  • Rural teacher salaries not up to par with South Dakota goals

    Aug 2, 2016

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — The average salary for teachers in South Dakota's rural school districts is projected to be well behind a state goal despite a new tax increase that's supposed to increase pay. When Gov. Dennis Daugaard increased the sales tax by half-cent in March, the goal was to raise the average teacher salary in the state from $40,000 to $48,500, The Daily Republic (http://bit.ly/2aDX9Zp) reported. School district numbers show that the average teacher salary in the region ranges from more than $39,000 to nearly $48,000 for the u...

  • Kansas seeing record turnover among school superintendents

    Aug 2, 2016

More than 20 percent of Kansas districts will start this school year under new leadership, marking “the highest turnover of superintendents in the history of our state,” according to a state official. Those studying the trend say it’s due in part to the stress leaders feel over finances and the political climate, where battles over education funding have dominated Statehouse debate for the past several years. “It’s difficult to be a superintendent when you see budgets get smaller and you see the quality of things you deliver to students...

  • Affluent Kansas City suburbs at center of political backlash

    Aug 2, 2016

SHAWNEE, Kan. (AP) — Small-government Republican conservatives face a political backlash in Kansas because of the state's budget problems and battles over education funding, and the epicenter is in sprawling Kansas City suburbs where residents have cherished public schools for decades. But the Democrats and GOP moderates hoping to lessen the grip Republican Gov. Sam Brownback's allies have on the Legislature must contend with a political paradox in Johnson County, home to those affluent suburbs. Its voters regularly approve bonds and p...
