  • Attention high school students and families

    Jun 23, 2020

Attention high school students and families: All school laptops must be returned ASAP, so they can be re-imaged for fall. If you still have the laptop , you will find that very soon it will “time out” and not allow user (you) to gain access to the internet. Until it has been plugged in to the internet at the school and re-imaged by the Tech guys, it will not work. The plan right now, is that the laptops will likely be checked back out to you in the fall, with upgrades including camera capability for face-to-face meetings with teachers, etc...

  • Public health officials, facing threats and political pushback, are leaving their posts nationwide

    Jun 23, 2020

For Lauri Jones, the trouble began in early May. The director of a small public health department in western Washington State was working with a family under quarantine because of coronavirus exposure. When she heard one family member had been out in the community, Jones decided to check in. The routine phone call launched a nightmare. "Someone posted on social media that we had violated their civil liberties [and] named me by name," Jones recalled. "They said, 'Let's post her address ... Let's...

    Jun 23, 2020

University of Minnesota researchers conducted one of the world's largest observational studies of COVID-19 patients and found that diabetes and obesity increased death risks, but that a common diabetes drug protects women. Metformin reduced COVID-19 death risks by 21 to 24% in women with COVID-19 who were already taking it to manage their blood-sugar levels and their diabetes, according to the U study results, which were posted online this weekend in advance of publication in a medical journal....

  • COVID-19 case growth drops in Minnesota despite protest fears

    Jun 23, 2020

A surge in COVID-19 cases following the mass protests and riots over the May 25 police killing of George Floyd has not yet materialized, despite aggressive testing over the past two weeks of people involved in the demonstrations that roiled the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Department of Health on Monday reported four more deaths and 308 more lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus. That is the lowest number of COVID-19 deaths reported in one day in the...

  • Major League Baseball plans to implement 60-game season

    Jun 23, 2020

Negotiations between Major League Baseball and its players began a month ago amid hopes that the game could save a barren sports summer. They ended Monday night with both sides hoping there is still time to save baseball. Unable to agree with the players association on changes to the deal they struck in March, the 30 MLB teams "unanimously voted to proceed with the 2020 season" - under its terms anyway - the league said in a statement. Once MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred formally implements a...

    Jun 23, 2020

Amazon.com Inc.'s giant fulfillment center in Shakopee has joined the ranks of Minnesota workplaces with a large number of employees sickened by coronavirus, with at least 88 of its approximately 1,000 workers testing positive for the disease caused by the virus. Proliferation at the Amazon facility has been slower than at several meatpacking plants that have been the worst-hit Minnesota workplaces. In those cases, hundreds of people contracted the COVID-19 in April and May and a handful of...

    Jun 23, 2020

DULUTH – The City Council voted unanimously Monday night to table a proposed ordinance that would remove the word "chief" from a job title, a change Mayor Emily Larson promoted out of sensitivity to indigenous people. Last week, Larson urged the council to support the city-led measure "so that we have more inclusive leadership and less language that is rooted in hurt and offensive, intentional marginalization." Council members have received dozens of emails from constituents and o...

  • Trump's intended show of political force falls short of mark

    Jun 23, 2020

TULSA, Okla. - President Donald Trump used his comeback rally to try to define the upcoming election as a choice between national heritage and left-wing radicalism, but his intended show of political force during the pandemic was thousands short of a full house and partly overshadowed by new coronavirus cases among his campaign staff. Trump ignored health warnings and held his first rally in 110 days in what was one of the largest indoor gatherings in the world during an outbreak that has...

  • While other school districts cut ties with police, Chicago has seen few concrete changes. Here's what organizers say is next.

    Jun 23, 2020

For the first time in years, it looked like the movement to remove police officers from Chicago's public schools was gaining momentum. Following the lead of Minneapolis Public Schools, school districts across the country started calling hearings about school police, or school boards voted to remove officers altogether. National groups, like the Center for Popular Democracy, began working with local organizers to increase the national reach of their demands. And, in Chicago, city council members...

The ACLU cites research that shows strict disciplinary practices in schools often target b...

  • Pivoting, Jeffco now says elementary students will return to school full time in the fall

    Jun 23, 2020

Citing parent feedback and concerns about equity, the Jeffco school district announced plans to allow elementary students back in schools full time this fall. The finalized plan, announced to staff Thursday, is based on the assumption that health guidelines will permit gatherings of more than 10 people by August. That would eliminate a challenge of finding staff and space to keep classrooms to nine students each. "We believe based on consultations with our health department, as well as recent comments from the Governor, that that limitation...

  • New statewide effort urges 2020 candidates to make climate crisis a top campaign issue

    Jun 23, 2020

Days after a crucial measure of global warming reached a record high, MN350 Action today announced a campaign to urge candidates at every level in Minnesota to make protecting the climate a priority in their campaigns. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced this month that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels in May were the highest in human history and probably the highest in 3 million years. Meanwhile, Yale University’s years-long study of attitudes about the climate crisis found most recently that 71 percent of M...
