  • U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen Must Offer More Than a "Moment of Silence" In Response to the Worst Mass Shooting In U.S. History and Worsening Gun Violence Epidemic

    Jun 23, 2016

Washington DC – In the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history in Orlando that left 49 innocent people dead and over 50 wounded or maimed, House Republicans offered nothing more than a “moment of silence”. Doing nothing has been the standard response from the GOP to any common sense effort to prevent gun violence since the mass shooting of 20 children and 6 adults in Newtown in 2012, and to the 188 school shootings that have happened since. And the National Rifle Association, a longtime front group for the big gun manuf...

  • Conservative study: Teachers make $2k less in base pay than before Act 10

Full-time teacher salaries declined by an average of about $2,000 after Gov. Scott Walker signed Act 10, restricting collective bargaining rights for most public employees, according to a study from a conservative legal group. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty report released Tuesday called the average inflation-adjusted base pay decrease "statistically significant." Over the same period, the average years of experience for state teachers dropped less than a year, to 14.2 years of experience. Researchers said Tuesday they did not...

  • School bus cameras will be back to catching dangerous drivers after change in law

    Jun 23, 2016

A new state law will permit Arlington County and the city of Falls Church to reactivate enforcement cameras on their school buses, which help snag motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses. The violation, which school officials say endangers young people as they get on and off of school buses, is difficult for police to monitor because of the volume of buses and because pursuing offenders can put children at risk. The school districts suspended their bus camera programs in October after Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring (D) wrote...

  • Police training class laid out in Gang Strike Force settlement still in the works 6 years later

    Jun 23, 2016

Six years after the scandal-ridden Metro Gang Strike Force settled a $3 million class-action lawsuit, a key requirement of that agreement has yet to be realized. The settlement called for creation of a training course for law enforcement to address such issues as civil rights, racial and ethnic sensitivity and seizure procedures so the misbehavior of the now-defunct unit would not be repeated. A panel was created in 2013 to develop the course. But three years later, there is still no program and the nature of the proposed educational training...

    Jun 23, 2016

WASHINGTON — Democrats carried a remarkable House floor sit-in into a second day, disrupting the business of Congress with demands for gun-control votes in an unruly scene broadcast live to the world. Republicans branded the move as a publicity stunt before summarily adjourning the chamber until after the Fourth of July. Even after the House adjourned around 3:15 a.m. EDT Thursday, and Republicans streamed to the exits, Democrats stayed on the House floor, shouting "No bill no break!" and waving papers with the names of gun victims written i...

  • Fears mount as another round of health premium hikes appears likely

    Jun 23, 2016

Facing a 50 percent premium hike on health insurance, Brian Freeman and his wife decided to hold the line on monthly costs this year by switching health insurers and picking a plan with a lofty $13,000 deductible. Freeman’s not thrilled with the results, and he’s wary about future premium hikes. “It feels like there are fewer and fewer places to hide,” he said. More than two years after major changes under the federal health law, Minnesota’s health insurance market for people who buy coverage on their own continues to wobble. Proposed...

  • Nearly 1 in 3 on Medicare got commonly abused opioids

    Jun 23, 2016

With an overdose epidemic worsening, nearly one-third of Medicare beneficiaries received at least one prescription for commonly abused opioids such as OxyContin and fentanyl in 2015. Those who did received an average of five such prescriptions or refills, according to the report f...

Allina Health replaced its 4,800 regular nurses at Mercy and four other Twin Cities hospitals with 1,400 temporary nurses when a seven-day strike started Sunday morning. • Gov. Mark Dayton says he's willing to compromise on public works bill

    Jun 23, 2016

Gov. Mark Dayton, looking to jump-start stalled negotiations with Republicans over a major package of public works projects and tax cuts, said on WCCO radio Wednesday that he's willing to forgo some infrastructure projects he previously said were must-haves. After the Legislature was unable to come to a deal on a major public works package in the final hours of the legislative session that ended May 23, Dayton said he would consider calling lawmakers back to St. Paul, but only if they met his requirements. Only the governor can call the...
