Authorities are hunting for whoever put "innocent people in harm's way" and hit four people with gunfire at a huge late-night house party south of the Twin Cities, leaving a woman critically wounded and three men shot among the hundreds in attendance, authorities said Sunday. The bloodshed that occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday at a rural home in the 4800 block of Elmore Avenue in Rice County's Webster Township prompted a large response from law enforcement, with personnel from sheriff's offices in Rice, Dakota and Scott counties, along...
WASHINGTON — Millions of people who pay the full cost of their health insurance will face the sting of rising premiums next year, with no financial help from government subsidies. Renewal notices bearing the bad news will go out this fall, just as the presidential election is in the homestretch. http://www.startribune.com/proposed-premium-hikes-rattle-consumers-paying-their-own-way/382607851/...

ORLANDO, Fla. — It had been an evening of drinking, dancing and drag shows. After hours of revelry, the party-goers crowding the gay nightclub known as the Pulse took their last sips before the place closed. That's when authorities say Omar Mateen emerged, carrying an AR-15 and spraying the helpless crowd with bullets. Witnesses said he fired relentlessly — 20 rounds, 40, then 50 and more. In such tight quarters, the bullets could hardly miss. He shot at police. He took hostages. http://www.startribune.com/orlando-police-mul...
NEW YORK — Andrew Lloyd Webber came to cheer on his kid rock band at the Tony Awards — and also to give out some money to encourage more musical kids. The legendary composer, whose "School of Rock," competed for the top musical prize Sunday, announced that he is funding $1.3 million to buy musical theater equipment in U.S. public schools and subsidize study. "I'm afraid what's happening in America is mirrored in Britain. It seems to be that nobody quite understands in the treasuries of our various countries that every penny you put into the...
It’s tempting to write that the primary season is over. That’s what we want, right? But the process has along way to go. Between next week and September voters will continue to winnow down the number of candidates for the U.S. Senate, House as well as state and county offices. Even the presidential primary isn’t exactly over. D.C. votes next week (So I’d even like to call Tuesday’s election night the Penultimate Primary.) That means a lot of the attention should shift from the top of the ticket to the candidates “down ballot.” (Data set: Na...
A Sheshatshiu man facing two counts of assault recently opted to have a sentencing circle as part of his court proceedings — and Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation Justice Coordinator David Penashue hopes more people will do the same. "We're trying our best to bring it back to the community," he told CBC News. Penashue estimates it's been about 10 years since the community's last sentencing circle. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/sheshatshiu-man-opts-for-rare-innu-sentencing-circle-1.3630921...

Fish consumption is an important component of many Native American cultures, and represents deeply held beliefs which have roots in spiritual practices, subsistence lifestyles and community. Therefore, for some Native American tribes, typical fish consumption may exceed levels typically reported for the general U.S. population. In many regions of the U.S., motivated by contaminant residues in locally-caught species, fish consumption advisories have been established to protect local populations from health risk, especially vulnerable...
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Native American students in dozens of schools around the country could be studying, and in some cases living, in unsafe conditions. But the government’s Indian Affairs department is falling behind in inspections and has no idea how many of its schools are safe. The agency didn’t examine about a third of its schools last year, even though it is supposed to do health and safety inspections every year, according to an audit by Government Accountability Office. Inspectors haven’t been to some schools in years. http://...
OTTAWA — It was the six-week “hunger strike” by former Attawapiskat chief Theresa Spence in 2012 which, while more publicity stunt than self-deprivation, put her reserve on the map of the Canadian psyche. Before that it was largely out of sight and out of mind. But it has almost always been a hellhole of a place — an isolated Cree reserve on the shores of James Bay, virtually inaccessible, its traditional way of life eroded, its infrastructure beyond crumbling, its so-called housing deplorable, its hunting grounds depleted, and its reason...
Kickapoo tribal leaders have filed additional counts against three former tribal leaders accused of misusing federal money. Darnell was the treasurer, and Adolph Cadue Jr. was tribal council secretary. http://www.wibwnewsnow.com/kickapoo-filed-counts-former-tribal-leaders/...
A Sonoma County-related lawsuit that attempted to establish the use of marijuana as a protected sacrament for use in religious ceremonies was tossed out in federal court this week. The claim that Sonoma County sheriff’s officers destroyed sacramental marijuana plants belonging to a Kenwood church was dismissed after the attorney for the church failed to show up in federal court. Two members of the Oklevueha Native American Church, which has a branch off Lawndale Road, claimed that sheriff’s deputies violated their civil rights by con...
MOSIER, Ore. (AP) — Leaders of several Pacific Northwest tribes gathered Thursday near the site of last week's fiery oil train wreck in Oregon to condemn the shipping of fossil fuels through the Columbia River Gorge, a scenic homeland and sacred fishing ground for the Yakama Nation and others over the millennia. "We do not want fossil fuels at all coming through the Columbia River Gorge — at all," said Yakama Nation Chairman JoDe Goudy. "We truly see what is at hand. ... We are sacrificing and putting at risk the long-term benefit and wel...
