Bred Arabian horses. Run a yacht club in the Bahamas, a rock quarry in Michigan, an auto-parts company in Canada, even a multibillion-dollar hedge fund. Now, as he neared retirement, Ponsoldt, of Jensen Beach, Fla., had a special request for Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm well placed in the world of offshore finance: How could he confidentially shift his...

  • U.S. cities see unexplained rise in violent crime this year

    Jun 6, 2016

CHICAGO – Violent crimes — from homicides and rapes to robberies — have been on the rise in many major U.S. cities, yet experts can’t point to a single reason why, and the jump isn’t enough to suggest there’s a trend. Still, it is stumping law enforcement officials, who are seeking a way to combat the problem. http://www.startribune.com/officials-vexed-by-violent-crime-rise/381920621/...

  • AP: Patchy reporting undercuts national hate crimes count

    Jun 6, 2016

BOGALUSA, La. — The knock on the door, strong and quick, jolted Barbara Hicks Collins awake. It was the middle of the night. Someone must be in trouble, she thought. She flung open her front door to the shocking sight of her car engulfed in flames. Investigators later determined someone had deliberately set fire to her Mercedes and also tried to burn down the one-story brick house she shared with her mother in this eastern Louisiana town, once known as a hotbed of Ku Klux Klan activity. Hicks Collins, a black woman, had no doubt the fire — set...

  • LaRose by Louise Erdrich review – formidable Ojibwe storytelling

    Jun 6, 2016

Louise Erdrich’s 15th novel is one of rare beauty. The action unfolds on the same (fictional) North Dakota Native American reservation where she’s set previous works – including her National Book award-winning The Round House – a place where the present is steeped in a rich but troublesome past. It’s also where tribal customs and connections still hold sway, so when Landreaux Iron accidentally kills his neighbour’s son, he and his wife offer up their own, five-year-old LaRose, in the dead boy’s place: “an old form of justice”. It’s...

  • Tribe makes efforts to reclaim reservation oil production

    Jun 6, 2016

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) — A tribal-owned oil company that started oil production last year has garnered roughly 1,000 barrels of oil per day for the Three Affiliated Tribes. Missouri River Resources' first barrel of oil was produced in June 2015, and last year it drilled four wells. The Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/287z7gB ) reports that the tribe is making efforts to reclaim oil production that takes place on the reservation by taking on leaseholds that are new or expiring. http://www.heraldcourier.com/news/tribe-makes-effor...

  • Mormon Church disputes tribal jurisdiction in Navajo abuse case

    Jun 6, 2016

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is refusing to submit to the jurisdiction of the Navajo Nation. Two Navajo siblings -- identified in court papers as "RJ" and "MM" -- sued the Mormon Church in tribal court in March. The complaint alleges they suffered sexual abuse while participating in a church-operated child welfare program in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But a declaration filed in federal court on Tuesday says decisions made by the Indian Student Placement Program occurred in Utah, not on the reservation. The church also...

  • 3 Fort Belknap tribal members found guilty of hunting violations

    Jun 6, 2016

Three Fort Belknap Indian Community members, one of them a tribal council member, have been found guilty of violating state hunting laws. The cases highlight what’s been a long-brewing dispute between members of the northeastern Montana Assiniboine and Gros Ventre tribes and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks over off-reservation hunting. In 2014 that disagreement escalated when tribal game officials detained an FWP warden for more than five hours and threatened to tow his state vehicle. The standoff ended with a citation issued to the warden f...

  • U.S. Senate bill could give five Southeast "landless" Native groups land

    Jun 6, 2016

A U.S. Senate bill introduced last week could allow Alaska Natives in five Southeast communities to form urban corporations. Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee, and Wrangell each stand to gain about 23,000 acres of land if the bill passes. But, the legislation does not come without controversy. In 1971, more than 200 Native corporations formed under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, known as ANCSA. But, Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee and Wrangell were left out of the landmark legislation. http://www.alaska...

  • If Native Americans aren't offended by the word Redskins, why should we?

    Jun 6, 2016

Many consider “Redskin” a racial slur against Native Americans. But if Native Americans are not offended by the word, do others still have the right to be offended for them? A recent poll by the Washington Post may have taken the air out of the national fight to remove the mascot “Redskins” from teams at high schools, colleges and, most famously, in the NFL. http://www.examiner.com/article/if-native-americans-aren-t-offended-by-the-word-redskins-why-should-we...

  • Leg Up For The Little Guys: Why Whole Foods Has Loaned $20 Million To Local Producers

    Jun 6, 2016

When Native American Natural Foods got their dried buffalo and fruit-based Tanka Bars into their first Whole Foods store in 2012, they celebrated with a lunchtime party at their headquarters on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Everybody cheered at the announcement. But then, one of the employees piped up: ”I know it’s important, but can you tell me, what’s a Whole Foods?” recalls CEO Karlene Hunter, who started the company in 2007 with Mark Tilsen using traditional Oglala Lakota recipes. http://www.forbes.c...
