The coronavirus is driving a steep and unprecedented increase in classroom costs that’s going to sweep through the nation’s school system as early as this fall. In total, America will need to spend $41 billion, or 5 percent, more next year to roll out remote learning, expand food service for a growing number of low-income students, and extend the school year to make up for lost days, according to a recent analysis by Michael Griffith, a senior school finance researcher and policy analyst for the Learning Policy Institute....
IT’S MONDAY, MAY 18. Social Security could be insolvent by the end of this decade because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to some new estimates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released much-anticipated guidance Friday to help school leaders nationwide as they weigh options to reopen schools in the fall - or even as early as the summer in some places. When compared to frameworks and recovery plans released by other organizations and states, the decision tree is relatively general and leaves much in the hands of state and local leaders. https://www.educationdive.com/news/how-feasible-are-school-reopening...

On March 13, 2020, President Trump declared the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, outbreak a National Emergency. Since then, life has inarguably and most drastically changed for all of us. Global travel restrictions grounded all international travel. State-regulated stay-at-home orders suspended non-essential in-person business operations. The White House and almost every local jurisdiction issued social distancing guidelines, and schools were closed. The country saw the steepest decrease in employment rates since the Depression. One thing remained...
Ada, Okla - Travis Freeze, Chickasaw Nation director of pharmacy, says safety and convenience were the Nation’s primary concerns in construction of its 32,000-square foot, automated drive-thru pharmacy. Both features have proven to be critical assets in serving the pharmaceutical needs of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The automation is just amazing,” Freeze said, adding the system enhances both quality and safety. “It allows us to fill prescriptions at a level of quality and safety we’ve never had before. We love the new...
The U.S. Treasury Department relied on “grossly inaccurate” data in deciding how to divvy up billions of dollars in COVID-19 relief money for tribes, says a new Harvard study. The agency ignored more up-to-date figures it required from tribes and instead went with outdated population data used by a federal housing program to distribute a portion of $8 billion in funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, according to Professor Joseph Kalt, co-director of the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development...

They called it the “Indian problem.” The white settlers wanted more land, and the tribes held rich acreages. Removing tribes from the Southeast was more than just an idea by the time Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1828. The Indian Removal Act was among his defining pieces of legislation. Jackson argued that moving tribes west of the Mississippi River would guarantee their survival. Instead it launched an era of genocide. Thousands died during the forced marches to land designated as Indian Territory. For members of the 39 tribes...
