These flags mark the spots where 30-foot PVC wick drains will be installed. A working platform has been constructed for wick...

  • Sunday liquor sales remain illegal in Minnesota after another loss at the Legislature

    May 13, 2016

The perennial effort to allow Minnesotans to buy liquor on Sundays failed again after a House debate Thursday featuring passionate speeches about protecting mom-and-pop businesses, public health and freedom. “This is America. People are supposed to be able to shop on the day they want to shop,” said Rep. Tina Liebling, DFL-Rochester, part of a bipartisan coalition that has sought to legalize Sunday sales for years, only to see the measure defeated again this session on the House floor 70-56. http://www.startribune.com/sunday...

  • Daily fantasy sports faces major defeat in Minnesota Legislature

    May 13, 2016

A bill formally legalizing daily fantasy sports hit a wall in a Senate committee Thursday. Sen. Rod Skoe, DFL-Clearwater, and Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, expressed opposition in the Taxes Committee that Skoe chairs, and bill author Sen. Sandy Pappas, DFL-St. Paul, surrendered and tabled the bill for the year. A House version sailed through with no opposition and would have ensured that thousands of Minnesotans can continue to test their skill and luck against other players for cash every day at the touch of a cellphone....

  • New home care rule intensifies Minnesota's caregiver shortage

    May 13, 2016

A new federal labor rule that was heralded as a victory for home health workers has aggravated a severe shortage of caregivers, disrupting care for hundreds of Minnesota’s most vulnerable residents. Many agencies that employ home care workers say they are cutting hours and rescheduling employees to avoid paying overtime and travel costs, which are now mandated under a federal rule that took effect late last year. http://www.startribune.com/new-home-care-rule-intensifies-minnesota-s-caregiver-shortage/379284851/...

  • Hennepin County studies waste habits to turn more trash into treasure

    May 13, 2016

Hennepin County is digging through your trash. A handful of men and women in hard hats and jumpsuits are sorting almost two tons of garbage in a downtown Minneapolis warehouse. The stink wafts from the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center’s tipping floor and is nauseating behind closed doors, but they’ve gotten used to it. The sort is part of a weeklong study to figure out what people are throwing away. Or more importantly, how we can throw away less and recycle more. http://www.startribune.com/hennepin-county-studies-waste-habit...

  • Sen. Durbin blasts credit card group for botched rollout of more secure cards

    May 13, 2016

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin on Thursday blasted the card network-dominated group that sets the standards for chip-enabled plastic payment, accusing it of mishandling the rollout of more secure credit and debit cards, lacking transparency and refusing, at the expense of retailers, to promote PIN authentication. EMV stands for EuroPay, MasterCard and Visa, but for consumers it mostly means a card with a chip in it that is more secure than the magnetic strips that have until last year prevailed in the United States. Some stores have adopted the new...

  • Moose in Minnesota represent a mystery

    May 13, 2016

Moose live in the extreme northern part of Minnesota, mostly in the rugged terrain of the northeastern counties and in the boggy lowlands north and west of the Red lakes. Unfortunately their numbers in Minnesota have been declining over the past 10 years; the majority of mortality appears to be related to disease and parasites, possibly brought on by a warming climate. http://www.startribune.com/minnesota-fishing-opener-merits-some-walleye-trivia/379206011/...
