  • The US 1940 Census and Red Lake

Once there was an old Head Chief in Red Lake. His name was Maydwaygwanonind. Roughly translated, I believe his name meant “He who is spoken to”. Family legend has it that this was because when there was a tribal council in the old days that everyone would have their say and at the end they would ask him what he thought. After deliberating he would speak. Historically, perhaps his greatest achievement was keeping Red Lake from allotment. (He didn’t do too badly personally either when they drew...

  • Red Lake’s McNeal, Beaulieu could challenge for state berths

    Bemidji Pioneer|Apr 12, 2012

RED LAKE – The Warriors captured the conference championship last year but the loss of three seniors will make repeating a difficult chore. Individually, however, Red Lake should have success. “I do think senior Rob McNeal and junior Corey Beaulieu have good chances of making it to state,” said Warriors coach Brad Castle. “This would be Corey’s second trip to state as he made it last year as a sophomore.” Castle also believes that the program is on solid ground as many younger players are participating in the feeder programs. “We do have good...

  • Cass Lake-Bena returns veteran, experienced cast

    Pat Miller, Bemidji Pioneer|Apr 12, 2012

CASS LAKE – Consistency is difficult for smaller high school athletic programs to attain but the Cass Lake-Bena baseball team seems to be an exception. This spring the Panthers will be shooting for their sixth consecutive trip to the Section 8A semifinals and, although they are yet to win the title, the Panthers always seem to be in the thick of the chase. “We never have quite made it all the way to the state tournament but we’ll keep trying,” said CL-B coach Ken Wittner who begins his 11th year in the dugout this spring. “We’ve won the Nor...

  • SMSC Water Goes to the Minors

    Apr 12, 2012

Prior Lake, MN – When a batter is standing at the plate ready to hit a baseball traveling at speeds of up to 100 mph, the last thing he wants is a distraction – like the sound of a plastic water bottle being crinkled nearby. Most plastic water bottles sold for consumer use in the United States are made from lightweight plastic which crunches noisily when it isn’t full. However, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community produces water bottles which are made from heavier weight plastic so they don’t do that. Because water bottled by the SMSC is pr...
