The plan to rename the street in front of the future Vikings stadium has drawn significant attention in recent weeks, particularly from critics of the team. An application submitted to the city said that in addition to making the stadium their permanent business address, the team “strongly object[s] to having the street running in front of the stadium n...

  • U study: Rural areas could have shortage of groceries in decade

    Mar 15, 2016

Almost two-thirds of rural grocers say they plan to leave the business within 10 years, yet most have no plans to ensure that their stores will continue to operate after they are gone — a possible blow to small-town consumers. That's the conclusion of a new study by the University of Minnesota, which found that rural grocers are particularly important for supplying fresh produce, and that their absence could diminish nutritious food options. "Grocery stores are the primary source of healthy food," said Karen Lanthier, a co-author of the r...

  • BIA Betraying Its Trust Responsibility for 'Disenrolled'

    Mar 15, 2016

The entitlement of Native Americans to benefits and services from the United States, as trustee for Indian Persons and Indian Tribes, cannot be terminated without due process of law on the part of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). The fiduciary duty of the U.S. Government cannot be so easily disavowed by the BIA when to do so involves the enforcement of a legal standard of “blood quantum” or “membership”, whether it is by the BIA or by a surrogate, such as an Indian Tribe. Those standards made their way into Federal Law at a time when th...

  • Disgusted with the 2016 presidential campaigns

    Mar 15, 2016

Growing more concerned and disgusted about the presidential campaign I thought that I should put my views in writing and post them online to see what other people thought; perhaps I would find some solace in the company of friends and others. First, here is what I posted, followed by some selected but typical responses. My biggest doubt about Hillary Clinton is that the Clintons seem to believe that they are not bound by any laws except maybe gravity, although they may yet challenge that too. I don’t want a Democratic presidency bound up by l...

  • Election 2016: Native Americans Are Gearing Up to Be Heard

    Mar 15, 2016

In this season of intense, sometimes rabid political debate, Native Americans have been largely ignored by mainstream news media. They attract scant public attention and receive only the occasional nod from major presidential candidates. “Of course, for Native Americans, invisibility’s always an issue, and it’s something that we have been very cognizant of,” said Gyasi Ross, an activist, author and member of the Blackfeet Indian Nation and the Suquamish Nation outside Seattle. “Everybody’s paying attention to the effects of the Black vote,...

    Mar 15, 2016

First Nations children living on reserve receive at least 30 per cent less funding for their education as children under provincial jurisdiction, according to a former chief economist with the TD Bank. Don Drummond's assertion runs counter to testimony from a senior official with the department of Indigenous Affairs last week during an inquest into the deaths of seven First Nations students in Thunder Bay, Ont. The funding formulas of the provinces and the federal government "don't align," Jonathan Allen told the inquest. "They can't be...

  • Drunk Town, USA: The Ditch Patrol Trying to Save Drunks in Gallup, New Mexico

    Mar 15, 2016

It’s past midnight on a cold February evening, and a woman staggers down the middle of the street, so intoxicated she can’t remember her address.
