  • GOP-led House passes teacher layoff bill, 70-63

    Mar 6, 2015

After heavy opposition and efforts to draw out a vote by Democrats, the GOP-led House on Thursday approved legislation that would require school districts to consider performance, not just seniority, when laying off teachers. The 70-63 vote was largely along party lines and came after nearly seven hours of debate and numerous proposed amendments ahead of the final count. Rep. Tony Cornish of Vernon Center was the only Republican to vote against the bill. http://www.startribune.com/politics/statelocal/295285351.html...

  • Senate GOP seeks to break up Minneapolis Public Schools

    Mar 6, 2015

Minnesota Senate Republicans want to dismantle Minneapolis Public Schools and create six smaller school districts in an attempt to close one of the state’s largest achievement gaps between white and minority students. Senate Minority Leader David Hann, R-Eden Prairie, says this is a way to overhaul a system that has been failing year after year. “In order to change results and the achievement gap, you have to think about how to change the system, how do you make it more responsive to the parents that it serves,” Hann said at a news confe...

  • Serious strain of bird flu found in Minnesota turkey flock; danger to humans rated low

    Mar 6, 2015

A strain of bird flu that's deadly to poultry has been found in a Minnesota commercial turkey flock but the risk to humans is low, state and federal officials announced Thursday. It's the same highly pathogenic H5N2 strain of avian influenza that's been confirmed in backyard and wild birds in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, but it's the first appearance of the strain in the Mississippi flyway, said Dr. Bill Hartmann, Minnesota's state veterinarian. The virus devastated a flock of 15,000 turkeys in western Minnesota's Pope County. Fewer than 100...

  • One more test for high school? Yes, please!

    Mar 6, 2015

Is our children learn good? It’s a question many parents have, especially since the Common Core lesson plan replaced the equally unpopular Rare Periphery curriculum. Even people who don’t have kids in the schools worry that the next generation of voters will be as thick as a Shamrock Shake when it comes to civics, and hence will make ill-informed choices. Unlike adults, of course, who agonized over their vote and stood in the booth clutching a well-thumbed and annotated copy of the Federalist Papers to their chests, hoping for the ghost of Was...

  • 3M pledges it won't buy pulp or fiber from deforested areas

    Mar 6, 2015

For the first time, the Maplewood-based conglomerate is requiring suppliers to trace and report the original “forest sources” of the wood, paper and pulp it sells to 3M. The company will then assess those sources against its new policy and refuse to buy any materials from threatened forests. http://www.startribune.com/business/295178711.html...

  • Straight outta Red Lake: Baby Shel has come a long way

    Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune|Mar 6, 2015

It's a long way from the Red Lake Indian Reservation in northwestern Minnesota to the great hipster uprising that is the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. Baby Shel already made the trek two years ago and was greeted like a major rap star - albeit, by only one mistaken sushi restaurant. "They kept bringing me free stuff, and I was like, 'What's all this?' " recalled Shel, who was wearing a wristband that said "artist" at the time. "They said, 'Anything for you, Fat Joe!' " Ye...

  • Dayton and Bakk, together again, but maybe not for long

    Mar 6, 2015

Gov. Mark Dayton and Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, in their first public appearance since a major blowup over commissioner salaries, smiled broadly and threw arms around each other in a show of unity Thursday as they advocated for a transportation package that would raise gas taxes to pay for roads, bridges and transit. “I want to hire him,” Dayton said of Bakk. “Let’s get a photo op for all of you,” said Bakk, wrapping his significant paw around Dayton’s shoulder as the two normally stone-faced men smiled while cameras rat-tat-tat...

  • Cabin Country: Second home is on ice

    Mar 6, 2015

I love to ice fish. I was about 8 years old when I started ice fishing with my father many years ago. We would fish several different local lakes in the metro area. We didn’t have an icehouse or a portable. We sat on a plastic bucket in the elements, used old jig sticks and used a hand auger to drill holes. One summer in the 1970s, he asked me if I wanted to build an icehouse. I jumped at the opportunity. We built one with a couple bunks. It was a bit too heavy, but we used it for several years and enjoyed it. As I got older I wanted to have a...

  • A Push to Improve Food Choices in Native American Communities Gets a Big Boost

    Mar 6, 2015

According to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health, nearly four-fifths of Native American men and almost two-thirds of Native American women are overweight. More than 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are also overweight. Diabetes is becoming so pervasive that we often overlook the consequences of excess blood glucose. Since much of a b...
