  • White Earth’s casino plan misguided

Archie LaRose and Floyd Jourdain Jr|Feb 27, 2012

The Red Lake Nation and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, along with other member tribes of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association (MIGA), are opposed to efforts by the White Earth Band of Ojibwe to develop an off-reservation casino in the Twin Cities. Contrary to claims by White Earth Chairwoman Erma Vizenor, the White Earth proposal is not at all consistent with federal law or the intent of federal Indian gaming policy. Several years ago, the Red Lake Nation and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe briefly entertained the notion of participating in a...

Beltrami County has 3,160 children (28 percent) living in high-poverty neighborhoods, according to Kids Count data released late last week by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Blue Earth County had the second-highest percentage with 21 perc...

  • Governor Dayton?s plan could add 14,000 new jobs in 2012

    Feb 27, 2012

In an effort to boost what could be the beginning of an economic recovery, Governor Mark Dayton has proposed a bill that can add as many as 14,000 new full-time jobs in Minnesota. I am pleased to be the author of this legislation and am hopeful that it will be acted on in the Senate Jobs Committee in the next couple of weeks. The proposal would make available a $3,000 refundable tax credit to Minnesota employers who hire new employees in 2012. These are full-time good-paying jobs that could be filled by people who have had a very long and...

Gas isn't like a rare bottle of wine that fetches a high price just because it's rare. But at the same time, no one can agree what drives gas prices. Demand for gasoline in the U.S. is at its lowest point in more than a decade; domestic oil production is at an eight-year high....
