The pickup truck rolled down the north Minneapolis street on Tuesday at a slow, ominous speed, an orange signal light flickering above the cabin. The state's unusually swift and vigorous discipline of a northern Minnesota care facility where a vulnerable adult is believed to have been subjected to a fatal beating signals a larger effort by the Minnesota Department of Health to follow through on promises of tighter scrutiny over the senior care industry. In early November, state health investigators arrived at Chappy's Golden Shores, a small assisted-living facility south of Grand Rapids, to investigate complaints of maltreatment. They...
WASHINGTON — Roger Stone, a longtime adviser and confidant of President Donald Trump, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony charges in the Russia investigation after a publicity-filled few days spent slamming the probe as politically motivated. WASHINGTON - Directly contradicting President Donald Trump, U.S. intelligence agencies told Congress on Tuesday that North Korea is unlikely to dismantle its nuclear arsenal, that the Islamic State group remains a threat and that the Iran nuclear deal is working. The chiefs made no mention of a crisis at the U.S.-Mexican border for which Trump has considered declaring a national emergency. Their analysis stands in sharp contrast to Trump's almost singular focus on security gaps at the border as...
WASHINGTON - The U.S. will be sending "several thousand" more American troops to the southern border to provide additional support to Homeland Security, Acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan said Tuesday, providing for the first time new estimates for the next phase of the military aid. He said the troops will mainly be used to install additional wire barriers and provide a large new system of mobile surveillance and monitoring of the border area. Plans call for about 150 more miles of...
As hearings continued at the Capitol on a series of proposed reforms to Minnesota’s sexual assault laws, a pair of lawmakers questioned whether more stakeholders should have been involved in their conception. Police and prosecutors weighed in Tuesday on recommendations from then-Attorney General Lori Swanson’s 10-member task force, formed after the Star Tribune’s special report, “Denied Justice,” documented pervasive failings in the way Minnesota law enforcement agencies investigate sexual assault. http://www.startribune.com...
BEMIDJI -- In the winter of 1950, Ira Batchelder had to wake up every three hours to record the temperature at the airport, where he slept in the administration building. He’d put the alarm clock in a tin can to make sure he heard it. Then, he’d bundle up and walk out to take the reading. He got a particularly cold result the morning of Jan. 30 -- it was 50 degrees below zero. After he submitted his report, Batchelder, received a message from the Minneapolis office asking him to confirm the reading. Even a news organization from Detroit was...

The Subcommittee on Health holds legislative and investigative jurisdiction over the Veterans Health Admin...

This Wednesday, Minnesota legislatures are going to ‘make history’ holding the first hearing inside Stillwater Prison. I'm speculating that we'll get the same treatment Wednesday” says Jeffery Young, prisoner at Stillwater. His speculations are not unmerited. According to the House Corrections Committee staff, the DOC has yet to guarantee any prisoners will be allowed t...
