CASS LAKE – Carri Jones’ victory in last week’s Leech Lake Tribal Council election was confirmed after a recount this week. Jones picked up two votes in the recount, conducted Tuesday afternoon by the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, paving the way for her to be the tribe’s first female chairperson. The recount brought Jones’ vote total to 1,337, compared to 1,330 for incumbent Arthur “Archie” LaRose. “We’re all excited to see what happens” once Jones assumes the tribe’s top...
BEMIDJI – The last time Tabitha Carrigan wrote out a ticket for a driver failing to have children restrained in their car seats, it turned into a pricey penalty for the parent. Workers at a local fast food restaurant called police to report the parent, who had ordered food through the drive-up window, was traveling with five children, none of whom were properly restrained. Carrigan, an officer with the Bemidji Police Department, said the violation proved to be costly – a citation for failing...

The County Health Rankings, prepared by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, ranks the overall health of counties by measuring residents’ health and how long they live. In Minnesota, 84 of the 87 counties received a ranking this year, with three counties – Traverse, Kittson and Lake of...
If Arthur “Archie” LaRose, chairman of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, has his way, a proposed bill to make amends for taking timber and land away from Minnesota tribal members will be put on hold. For LaRose, a delay to a 1999 settlement with the federal government is worth the wait to get the legislation right for the approximately 9,500 Leech Lake band members. Currently, legislation is advancing in Washington to release $28 million, including interest, to the Fond du Lac, Bois Forte, Grand Portage, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs and White Earth...
A popular Bemidji meat market plans to participate in the Jaycees’ Home, Sport and Travel Show next month, but won’t be selling its popular brats there. Instead, Stittsworth Meats will be a non-food vendor and distribute brochures and coupons to attendees. The business also plans to grill brats at its two locations during the event, which runs from March 30-April 1. The decision by Stittsworth owners comes one day after the Sanford Center advisory board offered a compromise for food vendors, cutting its original 35 percent sales commission...

Call it the year of unrest. The Bemidji area was marked by protests, a growing footprint of the nation’s largest rural hospital network and the changing landscape of the city’s south shore as 2011 came to a close. The year started off bumpy when Richard Hanson, president at Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College, announced cuts amid a $5 million budget shortfall for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years. His recalibration plan sparked protests from faculty, staff and students upset by the elimination of four academic...

Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp said Tuesday’s tip proved valuable, leading deputies to men walking alongside a road near Buena Vista Ski Area. “We couldn’t do this without people giving us calls and tips,...
