Michael Fairbanks rode a wave of support from across the reservation Tuesday to become the next chairman of the White Earth Nation. In a special election, he defeated Brent Gish 1,352 votes to 679 votes, winning lopsided victories in all the big precincts from around the reservation: Fairbanks won 246 votes to 86 votes in White Earth Village. He won 194 votes to 89 votes in Naytahwaush. He won 94 to 15 in Pine Point. He won or tied every precinct except tiny Beaulieu, which went to Gish 8 votes...
Former White Earth Secretary-Treasurer Tara Mason and her predecessor, Robert Durant, are among 15 candidates running for tribal chairperson in a special primary election June 4. The White Earth Tribal Council certified the candidates and released the names Wednesday. The winner will serve out the remaining term of Chairman Terry Tibbetts, who passed away from an on-going illness on March 17. Tibbetts was elected to a four-year term in 2016. The certified candidates, in the order released by the tribe, are: Eugene Glenn Sommers, David Eugene...
MAHNOMEN, Minn.—The White Earth Tribal Council has taken drastic action to balance the reservation's 2019 budget — laying off 25 employees and slashing some departmental budgets by up to 40 percent. The action is needed to balance a $12 million general fund deficit, caused by "four years of deficit spending by the previous administration," according to a tribal news release from the reservation in northwest Minnesota. Alan Roy won the tribal secretary treasurer's job from Tara Mason in an election earlier this year, and Ray Auginaush def...
The White Earth State of the Nation event on Thursday was a feast for the senses: Inside the big conference hall at the Shooting Star event center, the sweet smell of sage burning in a smudge pot mingled with the rich smell of sacred pipe tobacco, the nine-man harmony of the Smoke Stack drum group mixed with the jingle of veterans in the honor guard, and young White Earth Royalty danced in colorful garb. An overflow crowd watched as little kids from Head Start sang the National Anthem and...
Peggy Treuer, chief judge of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Tribal Court, was expected to rule Friday on a challenge to the April 5 White Earth Primary Election. No decision was announced as of press time. The primary election was challenged on several issues, including questions about the dismissal of three-quarters of the tribal election board just days before the vote, questions over absentee ballot procedures, and questions over residency requirements for candidates. Terrance “Terry” Tibbetts Sr. and Melinda “Mindy” Iverson were the top...
For more than 20 years, Erma Vizenor has been a force to be reckoned with on the White Earth Reservation. From the early 1990s, when she was a prominent member of the group that brought down the Chip Wadena-led government, to a few weeks ago, when she was forced by her political enemies to resign the tribal chairwoman’s office, Vizenor has been in the thick of the action. She came home from Harvard University in 1991 and joined the reform movement on White Earth, working for five years to help topple the patronage-based tribal council, d...
White Earth Tribal Chairwoman Erma Vizenor and District 3 Tribal Council Representative Kenneth “Gus” Bevins have both been re-elected to four years terms. Both won their primary election by more than 50 percent on Tuesday, which under tribal election rules means they are re-elected and there will be no general election this year. “Now I can go to St. Paul and get that casino built,” Vizenor said with a smile immediately after her victory. She is holding a press conference at the Capitol...
