    The U.S government on Tuesday unveiled its largest-ever program to help American Indian tribes identify and buy back land broken up from reservations 125 years ago. The Interior Department announced that $1.9 billion is now available to help tribes acquire ownership of million acres of land allotted to individual Indians in 1887. That’s when the government broke up reservations from communal tribal ownership and gave the heads of each home 80 or 160 acres.     BEMIDJI – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is adding restrictions on campfires and other fires in northwestern and central portions of the state starting Sunday because of worsening drought. The DNR will ban camp-fires starting at 1 a.m. Sun-day except in a residential or cabin yard or in a staffed campground, such as at a resort or state park.     The federal government appears ready to make amends for a dark period in Indian relations 123 years ago that took timber and land from six northern Minnesota Chippewa reservations. Legislation is advancing in Washington that would release a $20 million settlement to the Fond du Lac, Bois Forte, Grand Portage, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs and White Earth bands of Chippewa.
