  • 10 years later, Red Lake success story endures

    Brad Dokken, Duluth News Tribune|Jun 20, 2016

RED LAKE, Minn. - Pat Brown and Gary Barnard were working at opposite ends of Upper and Lower Red Lakes in 1997, but the fisheries biologists encountered scenarios that were as similar as they were gloomy. The two connected basins in northwestern Minnesota were all but devoid of walleyes. Fresh on the job as a tribal fisheries biologist for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, Brown said a population assessment in reservation waters produced a mere four walleyes in 48 sampling nets. "I was just...

  • Red Lake rendezvous

    Brad Dokken, Grand Forks Herald|Jan 18, 2016

RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION, Minn.-Let's get one thing straight here right off the bat about this early January fishing excursion: We'd picked the coldest day of a mostly wimpy winter to try our luck for rainbow trout and brook trout on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. The temperature last Saturday morning flirted with 15 below zero, and the brisk northwest wind made it feel even colder. No matter, that. We'd be fishing in the heated comfort of portable shelters, and the trout in these small...

  • Small water, big fun: Red Lake serves up fast action for rainbow trout

    Brad Dokken, Forum News Service|Jun 8, 2015

RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION, Minn.--The tiny jig tipped with a piece of crawler barely had hit the bottom of the lake some 40 feet below when it got smacked by a rainbow trout. There was no guesswork; this fish meant business. As fishing trips go, they don't start much faster. There'd be plenty more of the same in the next four hours. On a lake we had mostly to ourselves. The fast start was no surprise to Daris Rosebear. A guide for Seven Clans Casino near Red Lake, Minn., Rosebear, 25, is used...

  • Red Lake 15 years later: Historic agreement the Red Lake Band of Chippewa and Minnesota DNR signed in April 1999 produced walleye recovery

    Brad Dokken, Forum News Service|Apr 7, 2014

RED LAKE - As Al Pemberton recalls, it was about three years after the Red Lake Band of Chippewa and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources signed an agreement to restore walleye populations in Upper and Lower Red lakes that he saw the true potential for the big lakes' recovery. The agreement, which state and tribal officials had signed on a perfect afternoon in April 1999, resulted from the collapse of the walleye population in Minnesota's largest inland lake, a once-unthinkable outcome...

  • Red Lake Indian Reservation lakes live up to reputation for topnotch fishing

    Brad Dokken, Grand Forks Herald|Jul 8, 2013

RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION, Minn. — It was the kind of day best spent in a boat, sunny with a light breeze and a temperature in the mid-70s. The thunderstorms that had rumbled through the area the previous evening, lighting up the sky like Fourth of July fireworks seemed like a distant memory. As he almost always does, Darwin Sumner of Red Lake, Minn., had the water to himself on this perfect Friday morning. Outfitter manager for Seven Clans Casino, Sumner was fishing largemouth bass on a c...

  • Creel survey documents strong winter season on Upper Red Lake

    Brad Dokken, Forum News Service|Mar 25, 2013

Buoyed by good fishing and an expanded range of “keeper”-size fish, anglers kept more than 93,000 pounds of walleyes this winter on the Minnesota portion of Upper Red Lake. According to results from a winter creel survey conducted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the estimated walleye take of 93,007 pounds was more than double the catch from the previous winter, when anglers kept 44,862 pounds of walleyes. The creel survey began in early December and wrapped up with the clo...

  • Red Lake hosts Arizona youth for native camp

    Brad Dokken, Bemidji Pioneer|Aug 14, 2012

RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION – They came as strangers, young people from the Navajo Nation in Arizona who had never seen anything quite like the massive body of water the Aniishiinabe call Miskwagami-wizaga-igoniyg for its beautiful sunsets. Red Lake, they said, looked like an ocean. They slept in tents, swatted mosquitoes and shared scary stories around the fire. They fished, created artwork and learned about the history, culture and traditions of the Red Lake Nation. In turn, the Navajo youths...

  • Seven Clans Casino launches fishing venture on tribal lakes

The waters of the Red Lake Indian Reservation typically aren’t thought of as a destination for anglers, but a new offering through the band’s Seven Clans Casino aims to change that. Beginning this spring, the casino in Red Lake, Minn., will be offering guided fishing trips on more than 25 small lakes within the reservation boundaries. The guide service doesn’t include the tribal waters of Red Lake, but the smaller lakes offer the opportunity for anglers to catch everything from lake trout and r...

  • Red Lake Band receives $200,000 grant to track timber wolves

    Brad Dokken, Grand Forks Herald|May 30, 2011

The Red Lake Band of Chippewa has received a $200,000 federal grant to launch a satellite tracking study of timber wolves on tribal lands. According to Jay Huseby, wildlife director for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, the grant will allow the tribe to purchase 10 GPS collars to track timber wolves on tribal lands and learn more about the types of habitat they prefer. The collars cost about $2,000 each, Huseby said. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the grant this week as part of a $7 million package of Tribal Wildlife Grants the feder...
