BEMIDJI, Minn. — The net had only been in Lake Bemidji for a few minutes when the three Minnesota Department of Natural Resources boats began to converge.
One boat made a beeline for the shore near Paul Bunyan and Babe, the Blue Ox, where the two men who placed the net were waiting, along with about 30 supporters. The group — largely composed of White Earth and Leech Lake band members — circled around conservation officer Demo Regas as he cited Joseph Rousu and Leonard Thompson for fishing a day before the state’s opener.
