Beltrami County Deputies investigating shooting: 2 arrested in connection with the incident

ECKLES TOWNSHIP-On Friday, May 4, 2018 at approximately 3:57 PM, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office was called to the 5600 block of Alps Court NW in Eckles Township in Beltrami County, after receiving a call of shots being fired and one person being injured. Eckles Township borders the City of Bemidji to the west.

Upon Deputies arrival they learned that Vernon A.J. May, age 33 of Red Lake, MN had been shot during a neighborhood dispute. Deputies arrested Luiz J.S. Delarosa, age 23 of Bemidji, MN and David J. Cook Jr., age 21 of Red Lake, MN near the scene and they are currently being held in the Beltrami County Jail pending formal criminal charges. Delarosa and Cook were both arrested for 2nd Degree Assault with an additional charge of a person ineligible to possess a firearm with Cook.

Preliminary investigation revealed that May confronted Delarosa and Cook about an ongoing neighborhood dispute when he was shot by Delarosa and Cook. May was transported to Sanford Emergency Department, Bemidji, by ambulance and was treated for non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The handgun believed to have been used in the assault was recovered by a Beltrami County Sheriff's K9 Team.

The case has been submitted to the Beltrami County Attorney's Office for formal criminal charges.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Bemidji Police Department and Bemidji Ambulance Service.
