Chickasaw Cultural Center hosting Native Pottery Market & Symposium April 21-22

SULPHUR, Okla. – Native potters from across the region will gather for the Native Pottery Market & Symposium Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, 867 Cooper Memorial Road.

The potters will have a wide variety of unique, hand-crafted pottery for sale and will feature live pottery demonstrations across the campus.

Attend the captivating Pottery Symposium in the Anoli Theater Saturday, April 21. Bridging academic and artistic perspectives on Native pottery, this series of talks will shine light on fascinating topics such as traditional pottery revitalization and the diverse methods and styles of modern Native potters.

The Sculpting Cultures: Southeast and Southwest Native Pottery Exhibit features historic Pueblo pottery from the Keres language family and modern pottery from Five Tribes artists.

According to the Native Languages of the Americas, the Keres language is spoken by the Pueblo people of Acoma, Cochiti, Laguna, San Felipe, Santa Ana, Santo Domingo and Zia Pueblos.

From a Laguna water jar hand-crafted in 1880 to a Chickasaw effigy pot shaped like a bear, come experience the artistic cultural expression of these past and present Native potters.

This exhibit is a partnership with the Indian Arts Research Center at the School for Advanced Research and the Museum of the Red River. The pottery will be displayed in the Aaittafama' Room now through Sept. 2.

The event is open to the public at no charge. Potters will have their art available for purchase.

The film "Dunkirk" will be shown at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, April 21, in the Anoliꞌ Theater. Prices for the showing are $3 for children age 12 and under, $4 for adults or $6 for a movie deal that includes ticket, popcorn and drink.
