Bemidji Pioneer: Red Lake man sentenced for 2017 assault

ST. PAUL—A Red Lake man who attacked a Red Lake Forestry Department employee was sentenced to six years and 10 months in federal prison Tuesday.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Richard James Smith, 27, assaulted the man in June of 2017. Smith was at his mother's house on the Red Lake reservation when he came up behind the employee and hit him in the head with an aluminum baseball bat.
