Thousands of Twin Cities students walk out for 17-minute gun violence protest

At least 7,500 students in the east metro walked out of classes for 17 minutes Wednesday morning to advocate for gun control and to honor the 17 victims of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., exactly one month before.

Across the country, the protests took place at schools from the elementary level through college, including some that have witnessed their own mass shootings. Students stood silent in Red Lake, Minn .; about 300 gathered on a soccer field at Colorado’s Columbine High; and students who survived the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack in 2012 marched out of Newtown High School in Connecticut.
