Gov. Dayton's Capital Budget Proposal Includes Funding for Historic Fort Snelling Revitalization

The Minnesota Historical Society thanks Governor Mark Dayton for including our Historic Fort Snelling revitalization project in his 2018 Capital Budget recommendations today. Dayton included the requested $30 million for construction needed to revitalize Minnesota's oldest National Historic Landmark. The governor also has MNHS’ $10.388 million request for historic sites asset preservation in his budget recommendation.

The Historic Fort Snelling project’s vision is to inspire a better future by providing a place to learn, share and connect to all of the complex stories that shape our history in Minnesota. A new visitor center housed in restored historic cavalry barracks, new programming, outdoor learning areas and more will allow MNHS to share 10,000 years of human history at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers.

In the 2017 legislative session, the state of Minnesota provided $4 million for design work. MNHS is currently requesting $30 million in the 2018 session to complete construction. Visit mnhs.org/hfs2020 for project updates and to learn more about the revitalization plan.
