Minnesota man arrested for arson, attempted murder after New Years' Day house fire

NORTHERN TOWNSHIP, BEMIDJI, Minn. (Valley News Live) A Minnesota man was arrested for arson and attempted murder after a house fire on New Year's Day near Bemidji.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 8:30 Monday night.

Deputies and fire fighters saw flames and heavy smoke when they arrived. All of the people living in the home were able to get out safely, but investigators say one of the residents was acting strangely.

After further investigation, 20-year-old Damian Smith of Bemidji was arrested. Charges of arson, attempted murder, and obstruction of justice have been sent to the Beltrami County Attorney's Office for review.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office and the state fire marshal are investigating.
