Red Lake Lady Warriors take 3rd Place in NCTC Holiday Tournament with 71-68 win over Sacred Heart

THIEF RIVER FALLS – After the Red Lake Lady Warriors upset loss to Stephen-Argyle on Thursday evening, they met another tough team in the Consolation Bracket, another team ranked 13th in the state, Sacred Heart of East Grand Forks.

And right from the beginning it was a back and forth ball game, as each team traded baskets and went on little runs, but by the end of the first half Red Lake trailed 30-28.

Unlike their last game where there were a lot of fouls called, this game was quite the opposite, and two players scored 17 and 15 in the first half. Sydney Lloyd scored 17 for Sacred Heart and Autumn Holthusen had 15 for Red Lake.

In the second half both teams traded basket after basket again and it wasn't until the 14:00 minute mark that Red Lake took it's first lead of the night with a 3-pointer by Gericka Kingbird, giving Red Lake a 37-35 lead.

Sacred Heart tied it at 37-37, then Angel McClain nailed a 3-pointer to put the Lady Warriors back up 40-37.

Red Lake would never lose the lead again and went on a 17-2 run, leading once by as much as 16 points, 54-38, before Sacred Heart started to come back.

Sacred Heart came to within 3-points in the last seconds of play, but Red Lake hung on to win 71-68.

Autumn Holthusen led the Warriors with 21, seventeen of her points coming in the first half, followed by Alexis Desjarlait with 18 and 10 rebounds, Angel McClain with 16 and Gericka Kingbird had 12.

Sydney Lloyd led Sacred Heart with 28 points, Ivy Edwards added 14 and Maddi Mitzel hit for 10.

The win puts the Lady Warriors at 7-1 on the season

Red Lake travels to Laporte on December 19th, will host Cass Lake-Bena on December 21st and travel to Red Lake County Central on January 4, 2018.

In other NCTC Tournament action it was Cass Lake-Bena over Red Lake County Central 52-50 for 7th place and Clearbrook-Gonvick defeated Goodridge-Grygla 58-29 for 5th place. There were 78 total turnovers in the Cass Lake vs. Red Lake County Central game.

In the championship game it was Stephen-Argyle over Badget-Greenbush-Middle River 64-42.
