Gear Up probe ends with no charges

A federal investigation into the embezzlement of money from South Dakota’s Gear Up program has concluded with no charges being filed in the case, the U.S. Interior Department’s Office of Inspector General has announced.

The OIG investigation concluded that Scott and Nicole Westerhuis were responsible for the embezzlement of funds that were meant to prepare Native American students for post-secondary education. Authorities say Scott Westerhuis killed Nicole and their four children before setting fire to their Platte, S.D. home and committing suicide in September 2015.
