PUBLIC SAFETY NOTIFICATION: Leech Lake Reservation and surrounding communities

The Leech Lake Tribal Police Department and other area law enforcement agencies have recently encountered several medically distressed individuals suspected of ingesting and overdosing on heroin. Of the multiple suspected overdoses, one death has been reported, and others have survived after intervention from law enforcement and medical personnel.

Law enforcement is concerned for the safety of both heroin users and the family members of the heroin users. Law enforcement suspects that the heroin could be mixed with an unknown substance, which is causing an immediate medical emergency. It is possible that some of the heroin ingested prior to overdose may be laced with fentanyl. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more powerful than the related opioid morphine and therefore is substantially more potent. Non heroin users could suffer from overdose related effects from inhaling or coming into contact with fentanyl, or related products in this form. Law Enforcement wants the public to be aware that the reversal agent Narcan (Naloxone) may not work if the heroin additive is resistant to the Narcan, and more than one dose of Narcan is often required.

The Leech Lake Tribal Police Department is asking for the public's help in obtaining information involving the sales, use or possession of heroin and other illegal drugs to help combat the issues facing our community. The Leech Lake Tribal Police will continue to aggressively investigate these crimes in an effort to locate and apprehend those responsible for causing the devastating effects to our community. Please contact the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department at either (218) 335-8277 or Tips@llpolice.org

If you suspect someone is suffering from an overdose or any type of medical emergency please contact the Leech Lake Tribal Police or dial 911.
