ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY GENERAL RACHEL BRAND WILL TRAVEL TO OTTAWA, CANADA TO GIVE REMARKS AT THE TRILATERAL SUMMIT ON VIOLENCE AGAINST INDIGENOUS WOMEN AND GIRLS

WASHINGTON – Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand will travel to Ottawa, Canada to lead the U.S. delegation and give remarks at the Trilateral Summit on Violence Against Indigenous Women and Girls on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2017.

Associate Attorney General Brand will discuss renewed efforts to understand and build international capabilities to address violence and human trafficking in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

“American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls are disproportionately victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. We know that these vulnerabilities may also make them targets for human trafficking,” said Associate Attorney General Brand. “The Department of Justice is committed to addressing violence against indigenous women and girls in all of its forms through aggressive law enforcement and programs that serve victims. We are committed to working with our international partners to share information and develop capabilities to address cross-border crimes like sex and labor trafficking together.”

The event is closed press. The Department will provide additional information following the Summit.

Associate Attorney General Brand’s visit supports the Justice Department’s continuing efforts to reduce crime and enhance public safety. In April, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a series of actions the department is taking to support law enforcement and maintain public safety in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
