Police search freezing northern MN lake for missing fishermen

Authorities in the northern Minnesota town of Red Lake are looking for two fisherman who went missing after a boating accident.

Their boat capsized on Monday "near an area known as 'the Cut Off' on the eastern side of Lower Red Lake," local police said in a Facebook post.

The update says the craft actually had three occupants, one of whom was able to swim to shore and get help from some passersby. The two still missing have been identified as 29-year-old Deland Beaulieu, and an unnamed 17-year-old male.

Authorities eventually had to call off the search-and-rescue on Monday because of a rescuer who was "facing hypothermia."

The search effort will continue at 9:00 am on Tuesday, and Red Lake police are asking for volunteers to join.

All involved may face some serious challenges, though. With local temps in the single digits Tuesday morning, authorities are warning searchers to prepare themselves for "the extremely cold temperatures coming off the lake."

That includes dressing for "extreme weather conditions," and for those bringing their boats, using engine additives "to prevent gas lines from freezing" during the search.

Volunteers are asked to check in at the command center that's been set up at Red Lake Fisheries.

No other details surrounding the accident have been released yet.
