Naloxone: Get A Kit. Save A Life.

What is it? Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a medication nasal spray that temporarily reverses the effects of opioids if there is an overdose. Naloxone only reverses the effects of opioids such as heroin, methadone, morphine, codeine, or hydrocodone. Naloxone only works if a person has opioids in their system, and has no effect if opioids are absent. Naloxone is a safe medication with no potential for abuse.

Who should have it? People at risk of an opioid overdose, their friends and families.

How it works? When receptors in the brain are overwhelmed by an opioid, the receptors slow, then stop the body's ability to breathe. Naloxone has a stronger attraction to the brain's receptors and displaces the opioids for 30-90 minutes to allow breathing to resume.

Why use it? Since most overdoses are witnessed by a friend or family member, if a friend or family member had access to naloxone, he or she may be able to reverse the effects of opioid overdose, while waiting for medical care to arrive. By using naloxone you can save a life, and give someone a second chance to recover and live.

When to use it? If you see these signs, give naloxone and call 9-1-1

• Slow or no breathing

• Unresponsive

• Choking, gurgling

• Cold, clammy skin

• Blue lips, nails or skin color

If the person is still unresponsive 2-3 minutes after you gave the first dose, give a second dose.
