Major Delvin L. Schmunk retires from USAF

Retirement ceremony held at Red Lake Nation College

RED LAKE - At a ceremony held at the Red Lake Nation College on Saturday, August 19, 2017, Red Lake Band member Major Delvin L. Schmunk, retired from the United States Air Force after serving 20 years.

Schmunk is the son of LaVonne "Mickey" Schmunk.

He also thanked his wife Miki, son Kentaro and daughter Mariko for their support over the years and with the many moves across the country during his tour of duty.

Major Delvin "Chief" Schmunk is an Airpower Strategist assigned to the Headquarters Air Force Directorate of Strategy, Concepts and Assignments, Deputy Chief of Staff, Strategic Plans Programs and Requirements, Pentagon, Washington, DC. This selectively manned position provides strategy expertise in the Air Staff's operational think tank advocating the proper role of airpower. In this role he assesses threats, ascertains implications to join force and creates innovative solutions to future operational challenges. He integrates diverse conceptual work into the AF strategic planning framework from wargames and experimentation and connects concept developers in and outside of the Air Force.

Major Schmunk entered the Air Force in 1992 through Basic Military Training School at Lackland AFB, Texas. After a four-year active duty enlised career, he completed his Bachelor's degree and reenlisted in the Air Force Reserves before receiving his commission through Officer Training School at Maxwell AFB, Alabama in 2001. He has served as a Special Duty Postal Specialist, Intelligence Apprentice, and as a Space and Missile Operations Officer. He also has instructor and curriculum developer experience in Space and Missile Operations, as well as joint staff experience as a Security Countermeasures Officer.

During his most recent assignment with the Squadron Officer College at the Air University, Maxwell AFB, Alabama, he was the Division Chief of Distance Learning. He led a 16 member team of active duty reservists, civilians and contractors in planning and execution of professional development education for 3K+ students annually.

The Red Lake VFW participated in the ceremony after opening remarks, followed by the National Anthem, an Honor Song and the Air Corps song by Floyd "Buck" Jourdain and Jason Hart, remarks by Captain Joel C. Houseman, the Awards presentation and the reception.
