Groundbreaking Ceremony held for new Red Lake Retail Center - P4

RED LAKE - A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held for the new Red Lake Retail Center on Monday, August 14, 2017, at their new location across the street from the current one, commonly referred to as the Red Lake Trading Post.

At a cost of $10.2 million dollars, the new 27,000-square-foot project has been in the making for many years and will replace the smaller Red Lake Foods. It will also have a new laundromat, a new deli, a Subway restaurant and the gas pumps in front of their old store will be moved to the new one.

Their old facility, about 1/3 the size of the new building, might be used for storage or something else.

The project has been funded using a U.S. Department of Agriculture guaranteed loan and the tax credits from the New Markets Tax Credit Program, which is administered by the U.S. Treasury Department and is meant to increase business' investment in low-income communities.

Red Lake Chairman Darrell Seki Sr. said the new store was much needed, and soon there would be a new retail center in Ponemah.

The new facility will be over three times as large as their current building, with one goal of stimulating Red Lake's own economy, instead of having their dollars travel off the reservation to such cities as Bemidji.

Over 100 people attended the ceremony, including some tribal council members, Red Lake Incorporated executives, tribal members and others.

After the ceremony and prayer by Spiritual Advisor Arnold Kingbird, a feast of Red Lake Walleye was served.
